In October’s selection of MDPI Top Picks, we look at exciting research articles published across a range of scientific fields. This includes an article that explores a novel process to remove microplastic and organic pollution from wastewater. Research on wastewater management is key in reducing destruction to wildlife habitats and marine life. Additionally, the article includes a word from the author of a study focusing on the analysis of a new viral pathogen HPeV-5 – a type of Human Parechovirus that is known to infect children. We also introduce new research on understanding different learning behaviors in high schoolers and middle schoolers, with a study carried out in Estonia on how student perceive different learning strategies. And finally, we dip into the world of materials research, and how a novel study contributes to the development of efficient industrial non-destructive testing Read more: https://brnw.ch/21wOCSi

All articles in Algorithms MDPI (ISSN: 1999-4893) Vol 17, Issue 9, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wOrOu COVER STORY: The emergence of deep learning has sparked notable strides in the quality of synthetic media. Yet, as photorealism reaches new heights, the line between generated and authentic images blurs, raising concerns about the dissemination of counterfeit or manipulated content online. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop automated tools capable of effectively distinguishing synthetic images, especially those portraying faces, which is one of the most commonly encountered issues. This study by the University of Patras and the Ionian University presents a novel approach to synthetic face discrimination, leveraging deep learning-based image compression and predominantly utilizing the quality metrics of an image to determine its authenticity. Painted rock motifs are some of the earliest symbols of pre-historic indigenous activities. A recent article published in the Open Access journal Arts MDPI and cited in Newsweek, looks at rock art in the Serranía de la Lindosa vicinity of the Colombian Amazon and its cultural, religious, and societal significance. Art from this area was previously inaccessible due to political unrest, making it difficult to carry out archaeological research. But research now reveals rock art featuring depictions of flowers, humans, animals and geometrical designs. In the paper, researchers discuss how the rock art is linked to not just a reflection of real-life, but a representation of sacred rituals, spiritual practices and beliefs of the indigenous community of that time.
