❓ So, what exactly is a just transition? 🔎 We have learned through our work these past years there is no one-size-fits-all definition. In fact, it is simply not possible to identify a single solution or intervention. ⚖️ What we do know is the transition is underway and it is imperative to include of a wide range of voices and perspectives to ensure it is conducted in a fair and equitable manner. 🎙️ Join our CEO Leslie Johnston, M.Sc. this Thursday, alongside Giulia Corinaldi, Lauren Hermanus, Anthony Dane and Bella Landymore, to catch top findings from the Just Transition Mapping Tool, developed by Climate Horizons and co-funded by Wallace Global Fund, Ford Foundation and ourselves. This year's #ClimateWeekNYC, generated a lot of buzz around the topic of just transitions. Following up, we invited a diverse set of voices representing philanthropy, business, finance, and media to unpack their respective views and efforts to advance just transitions in regions and sectors across the globe. Our Director of Industry Programmes, Amol Mehra, moderated a compelling and candid conversation between Liz McKeon of IKEA Foundation, Zeeshan Suhail of Nestlé, Bella Landymore of Impact Investing Institute, and Katie Fowler of Thomson Reuters Foundation. In the session, we heard: 🤝 Multi-stakeholder collaboration is critical to progress the just transition agenda, including at the local level. From philanthropy, business, finance, and media, and also government – we need to build and invest in the collaborative space of various actors to come together, including in place-based approaches, to drive these transitions forward. 👷♀️ Centring the climate transition around the dignity of people will be key. Just transitions will be context specific and present differently across geographies and sectors. What we need now is to define what ‘north stars’ are to clarify what good looks and bring others along. 📰 Winning narratives will help pave the way. There is a need to stay the course and not be distracted by counter-narratives. The media will play an integral role by raising awareness and ensuring that practical, real stories of how just transitions are enabling positive outcomes for people and the planet are shared. 👏 Our very own Fashion for Good leads the charge to launch an invaluable tool that will transform how the fashion industry tracks, understands and utilises the untapped potential of textile waste. ♻️ Reflecting on the significance of the World of Waste platform, anita chester, Head of the Fashion programme at Laudes Foundation said: “Access to deep data to accurately determine where and how to intervene will be the real unlock in solving the mounting issue of waste generated across fashion’s supply chain. Ultimately, we know that better informed and more cohesive efforts between actors will lead to 🔑 increased (financial and non-financial) support to scale innovations, 🔑 industry proactively investing to transform their supply chains, and 🔑 policy creating the enablers to support the transition to an inclusive and circular fashion industry.” Take a look at the platform here: https://lnkd.in/eHkREMCM

🔥 Extreme heat and flooding could erase up to 1 million jobs and USD 65 billion in apparel export earnings from four Asian countries by 2030. 🌊 Our Labour Rights programme seeks to ensure that industry transitions not only mitigate climate change but also are people centred, enhancing livelihoods and upholding respect for labour rights. In 2023, we supported Cornell University ILR School and Schroders to produce 'Higher Ground? Fashion’s Climate Breakdown', a pivotal publication that details the major climate hazards expected, centres the risk faced by workers and highlights how susceptible the fashion industry is to climate change. 'Higher Ground? Fashion’s Climate Breakdown' is an important example of philanthropy’s ability to bring together different stakeholders and provide the data needed to initiate action by both industry and investors as well as kickstart vital discourse, bringing the conversation to the public and opening channels for discussion with governments, including audiences with the European Parliament in Brussels, the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington DC and the International Labor Organization See our Annual Report to find out more and access the link to the full report. #justtransition #climatechange #climareadaptation #labourrights #FutureofWork #Fashionindustry #philanthropy

💰 Our Finance and Capital Markets programme recognises finance has a pivotal role to play in addressing the urgency of climate change. With a firm focus on unlocking finance for just transitions in industry, we partner with organisations that work to: 🖋️ Challenge and change the rules and norms that govern the finance sector – by supporting the development of regulatory and accountability frameworks that will transform investment practices. 🔑 Help overcome the barriers to investment – through product innovation and policy levers that will allow private finance to flow to where it is needed most. 😇 Harness the power of the finance sector in challenging and supporting companies – activating investors to drive companies towards a green, fair and inclusive transition.
