Info
Building on Kofi Annan's legacy for peace by advancing democracy, youth leadership and international cooperation. The Kofi Annan Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2007 by former UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the late Kofi Annan. Our board is composed of prominent personalities from the public and private sectors around the world. We work to build a fairer and more peaceful world where no one is left behind, democratic principles and the rule of law are upheld, and divides are bridged through dialogue and international cooperation. Our work is underpinned by the same courage, integrity and creativity that characterised Kofi Annan's efforts to resolve even the most intractable global challenges. Inclusion, diversity and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do.

The EU's Democracy Shield is still an unidentified political object (UPO) at this stage, which is why the Kofi Annan Foundation, International IDEA, the European Partnership for Democracy and the European Economic and Social council joined forces to convene a broad group of stakeholders to discuss it, and make some recommendations for the New Commission. Here were my 4 key take-aways: 1) The EU should take a holistic approach, not focus only on defending against foreign interference in elections, for example; 2) It should implement existing tools. The EU adopted an impressive raft of instruments over the last few years (AI Act, EDAP, EMFA, DMA, DSA) which collectively shore up democratic space, but will be difficult to implement and enforce. That should be the priority; 3)The Democracy Shield (EDS) should aim to protect and promote democracy both within the EU, and beyond its borders, especially in the enlargement countries; 4)Defending democracy should be at the heart of the EU defence strategy. #democracyshield #internationalidea #Europeanpartnershipfordemocracy #europeaneconomicandsocialcouncil
