Conflicts, climate-related disasters and economic pressures continue to drive millions of people from their homes in search of safety or a better future. On this #InternationalMigrantsDay, we are pleased to share our ISS Impact Report 2023-2024. Our report covers two years of #socialimpact protecting #children and #families across borders since 1924. It underlines ISS activities in Cross-Border Social Casework, Network Development and Training, Advocacy and Alternative Care. It also highlights the achievements of the ISS International Reference Center for the rights of children deprived of their family. Finally, our two-year report has a special focus on our centennial celebrations and activities, and the ISS International Conference ‘Throughout time, across borders’ organised during the week of 7th of October 2024. Support us in our mission to support #families and #children facing complex socio-legal challenges as a result of #migration by downloading and sharing our report! Info
The International Social Service was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, almost 100 years ago in 1924 by a group of people wanting to find durable solutions for individuals and families migrating to the Americas after World War 1. We are now a network of ISS members present in more than 120 countries with a General Secretariat in Geneva providing coordination, training and capacity building. For the last 97 years, ISS has carried out cross border social casework protecting families and children separated by borders. So what exactly do we do? - We provide socio-legal assistance to families and children separated by borders - We protect children placed in vulnerable situations or deprived of their families often for reasons they cannot grasp (economic, social, child abuse, child trafficking, divorce) - We evaluate national child protection frameworks and advocate for laws that are always in the best interests of the child - We provide tailored technical advice and training of professionals with a special focus on intercountry adoption, alternative care, surrogacy and donor conceived persons - We offer training to all major stakeholders involved in child protection

#Kafala is a #childprotection measure with unique characteristics, recognised by international law, and practised in legislations that are based on Sharia law. It generally refers to the commitment of a person (kafil) voluntarily taking care of the specific needs of a child deprived of their family (makfoul). The kafala may be in the form of a family based agreement, a sponsorship, judicial/administrative or informal. A kafala placement may also occur at a #crossborder level. Protecting the rights of children, especially children deprived of their family, has always been central to the mission of ISS. In 2020, ISS published 'Kafalah: Preliminary analysis of national and cross-border practices'. Since then, ISS has observed that much progress is still needed. ISS latest article 'Principles to ensure a cross-border kafala placement is in the best interests of the child' by ISS Jeannette Wöllenstein-Tripathi and Giovanna Ricciardi, aims to guide #states in ensuring that #crossborder #kafala placements prioritise the best interests of the child. Furthermore, by contributing to academic publications, ISS tries to bridge the gap between ISS practical expertise and academic research. This article is also the result of an active engagement in the EU Project FAMIMOVE. "Human rights are under assault. This year’s theme reminds us that human rights are about building the future — right now. We must stand up for all rights — always." UN Secretary General António Guterres. ISS has been doing just that for 100 years. Since 1924, ISS has been defending and promoting #humanrights. ISS protects the rights of #vulnerable #children and #families facing complex sociolegal challenges. Through their cross-border social casework, ISS members take decisions that are in the best interest of children. ISS promotes the rights of children to grow up in a #family environment by #reuniting families or keeping them together through #communitybased efforts and #sociolegal counselling. ISS also works on complex topics such as #searchfororigins defending the right of everyone, including children, to know their #identity. Do you want to support our work?
