🏃♂️ Physical Activity and Patients' Nutritional Assessment Indicators 🏃♀️ 👨🎓 Yusuke Tamamura, Chihiro Hachiuma, Michiko Matsuura, Sumiko Shiba and Toshio Nishikimi from Wakakusa-Tatsuma Rehabilitation Hospital and Konan Women's University 🔍 Did you know that malnutrition is one of the most serious health problems for older people? Malnourished patients often struggle with activities of daily living (ADL) upon admission and show slower recovery rates during their hospital stay compared to their well-nourished counterparts. Given these challenges, addressing malnutrition is crucial for improving outcomes for patients in rehabilitation wards. 🥝 🥑 It was recently reported that three nutritional indicators, the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT), are good predictors of improved scores on ADL indicators, such as the Functional Independent Measure (FIM) or Barthel Index (BI), in patients admitted to convalescent rehabilitation wards. 🐋 This study shows that MNA-SF scores were the best nutritional assessment tool for predicting improvement in physical activity at discharge in patients admitted to convalescent rehabilitation wards after hospitalization. 👉 Want to learn more?
