Attention business owners! The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario | Agence fédérale de ... recently opened the application intake where you can access up to 50% to a maximum of $10 million in interest-free loans for Ontario businesses to adopt/adapt innovative technologies, processes and/or services, as well as for investments that lead to business growth. Program intake priorities for 2024 are: Clean economic growth – projects that support the greening of the economy, that can contribute to emissions reductions, and that create sustainable and green jobs. Growth companies – projects that accelerate business development and growth. Technology – projects in cutting-edge sectors (e.g., artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, medical technologies, digital health, and agri-tech). Industrial transition – projects that support change in traditional sectors to adopt new technologies and other innovations to improve their competitiveness and build new opportunities (e.g., the adoption of automation in manufacturing to increase efficiency and productivity). Priority may be given to projects that support the transition to zero-emission vehicles and housing manufacturing innovation. Funding is available to Southern Ontario companies that have 5-1000 employees and have been in operation for at least 2 years. Eligible expenditures include equipment purchase and installation, facility retrofits, consulting fees, marketing, and promotion, as well as project-related employee wages and other expenses. Why does it seem municipal innovation centers are failing and closing at an alarming rate? Innovation hubs at the local level can encounter a variety of obstacles that may result in their downfall. Here are some typical reasons: -Poor programming: Insufficient "Entrepreneurship Education " programming to help individuals start or grow an early-stage startup. - Lack of Defined Goals: Without clear objectives, these centers may struggle to gauge their success and have a meaningful impact. - Insufficient Financial Support: Continuous funding is essential. A shortage of resources can impede day-to-day activities and hinder expansion. - Poor Community Engagement: Neglecting to involve the local community, businesses, and stakeholders can lead to a lack of backing and relevance. - Resistance to Change: Resistance from within the bureaucracy and a risk-averse culture can inhibit innovation initiatives. - Ineffective Leadership: Poor management and leadership can result in a lack of direction and inefficiencies. - Failure to Learn from Mistakes: Not embracing a culture of learning from errors and making changes based on feedback can hinder progress and adaptation. - Challenges Related to Location: Issues with physical location and infrastructure can restrict the effectiveness and accessibility of these centers. - Technology Mismatch: Implementing technology that does not align with community needs or center objectives can result in wasted resources. - Lack of Collaboration: Innovation thrives on partnerships. Insufficient collaboration with the private sector, academia, and other government bodies can limit potential. - Inadequate Evaluation of Impact: Without proper metrics to assess impact, it becomes difficult to justify the existence and funding of these centers. It is crucial for innovation centers to actively address these challenges and continuously evolve to effectively serve their communities.

EST Call for Speakers - Application Process Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) and partner organizations are hosting a virtual conference for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Speaker Criteria We are seeking speakers with lived experience with disability, professionals with disability inclusion knowledge, those from the disability community, service providers, businesses, advocates, allies and other interested parties. We are looking for 6 speakers who match the following criteria. Please include your preference as a presenter or panelist. ● Disability awareness activists ● Policy makers or executives in charge of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) or disability rights ● Government officials focused on disability rights ● Members from organizations or companies focused on disability and equity ● Members from the community with lived experience and stories to share on becoming advocacy changemakers ● Individuals who have made significant progress in helping those with disabilities Main theme: Embracing Change for People with Disabilities Subthemes: · Personal change · Organizational change · Attitudinal change Please note that nominations for speakers are also accepted.
