Last week, I had the unique opportunity to join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron for an intimate 18-person lunch in Montreal to discuss the future of AI. The conversation, led by two of the godfathers of deep learning, Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun, included important discussion on aspects like AI safety, AI regulation, data sovereignty, and the like. My contribution centered around how AI can improve productivity in our economies by driving tangible impact across industries. In home care, AI presents a significant opportunity to streamline operations and improve care delivery by optimizing resources. Even a 10% reduction in overhead through AI could allow healthcare providers to deliver more efficient, responsive services and better meet growing demand. At AlayaCare, we are fully committed to integrating AI into our solutions. From enhancing operational efficiency to predicting client needs, AI is a powerful tool that’s helping our customers deliver better care outcomes. Today is the first day of the 2024 #PEI Operating Partners forum -- one panel we'd like to highlight is on the future of value creation at the intersection of #talent, #tech, and #AI Our take is that AI won't save your portfolio companies. The right mix of talent and tech might -- but always, always err on the side of talent over tech. We think many PE operating partners are getting this fatally wrong -- "digital transformations" and "AI solutions" can't and won't fix the fundamental cultural issues blocking value creation. Here's what actually drives value: - Data foundations first. AI fails without clean, structured, consolidated data. period. get basic data architecture and data operations right. we've seen #portcos halve time spent on reporting just by standardizing their data pipelines. - Hire communicators, not just technologists. You need people who understand both business operations and the tech side. They're rare and expensive but worth it. They'll prevent your portfolio companies from building solutions nobody uses. - focus on specific, focused value drivers. Don't try to transform everything at once. identify 2-3 key operational metrics per company that directly impact ebitda. Build your talent and tech strategy around these. - Automate the obvious before the ambitious. most portfolio companies still waste far too much time on manual reporting and *basic* analytics. You have to fix that before attempting (before even thinking about) fancy predictive models and AI solutions. AI for talent is overrated. Use it for first-pass candidate screening and employee feedback analysis. but the real value is in using AI to make existing teams and domain experts more productive. IMO the winners in PE will be those who build strong data foundations, hire the right communicators, and implement tech strategically with concrete problems in mind. Focus on fundamentals. Whatever happened to VC-backed IPOs? Looks like the volumes are at all time low, according to Eric Newcomer, and the M&A activity isn't enough to cover the delta. Back in the "olden days" going public was the highest badge of honour! If we are in a trend where the C-suite is comfortable with being liquid but wants none of the accountability of being public, I sense our industry is ripe for some regulatory improvements. What a tremendous conversation on AI in medicine from Stephanie Feals and Apurv Gupta, MD, MPH, with Robert Pearl, M.D. and Sherri Douville. So many important (and some third-rail) topics covered: productivity and accuracy, the perverse incentives of a volume-based healthcare system, (dis)trust of generative AI, privacy, education, and more. There are few professions where generative AI can have a more revolutionary and positive impact if done right and a more destructively negative impact if done wrong. How do we lean into the "right" and head off the "wrong" before it's too late?

I had the privilege to sit down with William Carbone, who you may already know from his work as CEO and co-founder of Evalify (under Nobody Studios), as well as his role at The Adjacent Possible. For the last 14+ years, William has been a significant innovator in the technology and entrepreneurship space. Grateful to Jules Adam and Labiotech for the chance to talk about such an important topic: using AI to advance Alzheimer’s research. Honored to have been interviewed and share how AI is starting to break new ground in the fight against this complex disease. With Alzheimer’s, the challenges are immense. Traditional approaches struggle to keep up with its multifaceted nature, but AI is helping us make real progress—enabling earlier detection, exploring new pathways for drug discovery, and even rethinking how we approach existing treatments. At SandboxAQ, we’re working with large quantitative models (LQMs), which simulate molecular interactions and give us insights as though we’re observing them in real-time. An exploding market that demands more attention: Women’s Health & FemTech. Women’s healthcare products and services are tracking to become a $1 Trillion global market by 2027. The menopause sector has grown by 74% in just the last 5 years. Historically, this hasn’t been the case. As of 2018, only 4% of R&D funding went to FemTech. According to McKinsey and Pitchbook, 0.1% of all Femtech funding went to menopause management and only 7% of Femtech companies address menopause care. Lack of awareness and education have long been barriers to funding and innovation: • Most OBGYN residents receive less than 4 hours of menopause instruction. • Women experiencing menopausal symptoms either don’t realize it or are dismissed when they express them. • HRT (Hormonal Replacement Therapy) is an effective treatment, but its risks have been misrepresented, stifling its popularity. It’s an injustice. And a missed opportunity: • Women control 80% of healthcare spending in the US • Women spend 25% more of their life in poorer health than men. Now? With transparency on social media and increased self-advocacy, the trend is changing. Influencers and celebrities opening up about their menopause journeys on social media have helped demystify what women experience, and what can support them through it. Real symptoms – hot flashes, insomnia, vertigo, fatigue, arthralgia or myalgia, headaches, palpitations, and more – are being validated and treated. Innovators in this space have an edge: While customer acquisition is relatively harder, customers tend to be stickier. For example, Otsuka’s acquisition of Bonafide in Nov 2023 was a strategic move to acquire a smaller company with great IP and a trusted brand. These are a few more interesting players in the menopause sector: • Embr and Moona, focusing on sleep management • Mina Health and MBody, for self-testing and wellness • Gennev, for virtual care Brands like these will play a role in transforming how we address pivotal care for women. My takeaways: The conversation around menopause and women's health is changing. It's time for innovators to step up and meet the growing demand.
