I recently had the honour of hosting Universal Robots’ first Technical Summit in Detroit for our distributors, focused on empowering them with the latest technical updates, insights on upcoming product launches, and stronger connections with the UR team.🙌 The 1.5 days were filled with networking and meaningful engagement, covering key topics such as an introduction to PolyScope X, insights into our AI capabilities and recent launches, Optimove, the new end-of-arm safeguard in partnership with SICK Sensor Intelligence, and much more. Here are some tools I used to design the experience: 🍹 Breaking the Ice: We kicked off with an optional evening networking event the day before, with casual seating and high tables to encourage mingling. This created a warm, energetic atmosphere the next morning, with everyone already having met a few faces before the summit. 📲 Interactive Connections: Each speaker’s intro slide included a QR code, nudging participants to connect with UR staff and external speakers, strengthening those new relationships. ✨ Multiple Spaces for Focus: Using different rooms for sessions helped re-energize participants, giving them a chance to move around, stretch, and approach each new session with a fresh mindset. 📚 The Power of Choice: Attendees built their own agendas, choosing from various workshops over three rounds, ensuring each participant got the most relevant content for their role. ⚡ Post-Lunch Re-Energizer: To counter the usual post-lunch dip, we hosted a speed-dating session with UR experts at tall tables in the foyer. This setup allowed participants to move between 12 different experts, engaging in direct, dynamic conversations on technical topics—keeping the energy high! 📊 Engagement with Live Polls and Q&A: Using Slido for live polls, word clouds, and anonymous Q&A, participants could interact throughout the keynotes, ensuring their voices were heard. These methods were all inspired by the Danish Meetovation principles on innovative meeting design, emphasising engagement. I've spent over 15 years in industrial manufacturing. There is a lot of hype about humanoid robot tech right now. I think it is very exciting but it will take a while until that tech is ready for broad factory floor adoption. It’s a lot of promise for the future, but here’s the problem with humanoid robots in the manufacturing sector: Most manufacturing tasks don't need human-like robots. A simple SCARA or 6-axis robot programmed for a specific job works better, costs much less, and will be easier to maintain. It’s true that the tech behind humanoids (actuators, sensors, AI) will keep improving. And costs will drop. But specialized automation tools remain the better choice for factory now.  I think it will be hard to replace a reliable SCARA robot from a maintenance and efficiency standpoint. At the end of the day, pick the simplest tool that solves your unique problem. Skip the hype, focus on results.

If a part doesn’t need to move relative to another part, if it doesn’t need to be a dissimilar material, and if it doesn’t need to be separate for purposes of disassembly or service/repair, then IT SHOULDN’T BE A PART! It can become integrated into another part, thereby reducing parts count, inventory, reliability (failure) risk, supply chain logistics, assembly time, and most importantly COST!

Over my 12 years in manufacturing industry in Canada, I’ve realized that success in this field isn't just about technical expertise. Of course, technical skills are important, but what has truly made a difference for me are the non-technical skills I’ve developed along the way. If I could sum up my experience in Manufacturing Industry in a list of key lessons, this is what it would look like: 🔍 1. Be Curious: Don’t just sit at your desk—get on the floor, talk to people, and learn the processes. Understanding how things work on the ground level will help you improve them. 🤝 2. It’s a People Game: The best solutions are the ones that work for the whole team. Building relationships with your colleagues, operators, and supervisors is crucial for success. 🙏 3. Stay Humble: The operators and supervisors are experts in their roles. Be grateful for what they teach you. Remember, you’re all part of the same team. ❓ 4. Question Everything: Asking “why” is a powerful tool for continuous improvement. Don’t settle for ‘this is how we’ve always done it.’ Keep pushing for better solutions. 🗑️ 5. Look in the Garbage Bin: Sometimes the best insights come from waste. Look at what’s being discarded—can it be reduced, reused, or improved? The answers often lead to impactful improvements. 📚 6. Keep Learning: Manufacturing is constantly changing. Stay open to new ideas, tools, and processes. Your willingness to keep learning will define your growth. I hope this helps fresh graduates and professional immigrants who are navigating their way into the industry in Canada!
