    I was initially on a small ad hoc subcommittee tasked with developing the CBA National Immigration Section's response to the alarming events of racial injustice in the United States. A recommendation I put forth was to create an Anti-Racism/Race Equity Committee that would directly engage in racism within the Canadian immigration system. This committee began formally in September 2020 and includes members (almostly entirely represented by Women of Colour) across Canada. We are currently in the process of formulating our agenda, which will include commenting and inputting on our Section's submissions, advocating for BIPOC representation on the judiciary and tribunals, and exploring the intersection of race and immigration at the Immigration and Refugee Board, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency.

    I assumed the Co-Chair position in September 2022, after two years on the Committee as a member.

    In September 2020, in response to increasing demands for advocacy, research, and education ("ARE"), I co-founded a non-profit organization alongside my colleague, Edris Arib ("NOUS").

    We are focused on promoting and supporting the rights and integration of newcomers and (im)migrants (including international students, temporary foreign workers, and refugees) in British Columbia, Canada and Globally. Our work includes Advocacy, Research and Education.

    We are focused on promoting and supporting the rights and integration of newcomers and (im)migrants (including international students, temporary foreign workers, and refugees) in British Columbia, Canada and Globally. Our work includes Advocacy, Research and Education.

    ADVOCACY
    To advocate for underrepresented and intersectional newcomers and (im)migrant communities in British Columbia, Canada, and Globally. We aim to create safe and brave spaces for these communities through promoting and creating human rights and rule of law advocacy platforms;

    RESEARCH
    To reveal issues that are often hidden in plain sight, but disproportionately impact racialized newcomers and (im)migrant communities through publishing independent and evidence-based reports to better shed light on underexplored issues affecting these communities both here and in global diasporic communities and propose policy recommendation; and

    EDUCATION
    To educate, build capacity and empower our target audience within British Columbia, Canada, and Globally on the rule of law and human rights subject matters including (im)migrants and newcomers’ rights, immigration processes, and integration. We will do so through conducting capacity building training programs, workshops, forums, and public events.

    "Will Tao’s blog encompasses so much, it’s hard to know where to begin. It features in-depth coverage of immigration policy, cases and legislation and pays special attention to international students and migrant workers. But what makes it award-worthy is its candid discussion of power, privilege and race along with personal reflections. Will writes in an engaging, authentic style and raises the voices of those around him, too."
