I lead a generally charmed life. I have enough food to eat, a modest but nice home, and a beautiful family. My father died suddenly and unexpectedly four years ago, and I’ve lost several friends and family over the past few years, but my suffering has, overall, been minimal. Not everyone is so lucky. There is lot wrong with the world. Climate crisis, wars, injustice, misogyny, violence against women, prejudice, hate, homophobia, the hording of wealth, pollution, genocide, child labor exploitation, political divide, corporate greed, the threat of world war, crime, transphobia, racism, xenophobia, corporate exploitation, inflation, deforestation, poverty, homelessness, the opioid epidemic, low productivity, cancer rates, obesity, the paywall for Wordle… It’s overwhelming. None of us individually can do much to fix all of this stuff, but all of us can pick one thing, or a couple of things, to move the needle in the right direction. If enough of us do that, the world will get better. For me, my “thing” has been truth and reconciliation with the Indigenous community, along with some additional work in anti-racism/xenophobia, autism awareness, wrongful convictions, and violence against women. What does this have to do with LinkedIn, ask the “business focused” professionals? I do my community-building work through my business; by doing work for these causes either gratis or at our cost. I make movies, shows and videos for a living, so this is the area - putting hands on craft - where I can contribute the most value. So, even when I’m trying to do good work for other disadvantaged groups, a significant burden is still placed on the lady I married, Jennifer Bucholz Stark I acknowledge and appreciate my privilege, and can say confidently that I wouldn’t be helping anyone without her support.

Why “SHE'S GOT NEXT”? Because we saw a gap. We were tired of seeing the lack of support for women’s sports in Canada: less funding, less coverage, and frankly less respect. If you’ve ever heard someone yell “I’ve got next!” from the sidelines – an announcement to everyone that they want to be in the game – then you know what I mean. We want every woman who asks for a shot to have a community making sure she gets it. We are bridging the gender gap in athletics by bringing together powerhouse women who have been shaped by sports. We’re rallying together to let the next generation know that we are behind them. SHE’S GOT NEXT is a professional network connecting women who currently play or have played elite-level sports. There is strength in that community and those shared experiences. Many of the women on the fields and courts today will be on the job market tomorrow, and we want to show them the path. Here are my top 10 tips to to help you navigate your internship/co-op and make the most out of your summer position: 💼✨ 1. Stay Organized: Keep track of deadlines, meetings, and tasks to ensure you stay on top of your responsibilities. 3. "Yes, empathy is a skill that can be learned," I responded to an attendee's question at the Women in Tech Summit last week. I had a wonderful conversation with an attendee about diversity and inclusion in work teams. Since I speak and train on empathy skills, I introduced empathy as a foundation for relating to others and the importance of empathy as a leader competency; she curiously asked, "Do you think empathy can be taught?" Actually, a different version of this question was asked several times throughout the conference. Surprisingly (but not really) though, in some shape or form, empathy was a part of all the sessions I attended. The highlights of this retail conference echo the message I gathered from the Women in Tech Summit last week. You can't really innovate and do DEI work without human components, like empathy. 🍷 Navigating Ontario’s Alcohol Expansion: Convenience & Concerns Yesterday, I covered Ontario’s latest expansion of alcohol sales to grocery stores — a move that brings new convenience to residents but has sparked critical concerns among health groups. While it is great to be able to pick up two bottles of red while doing your grocery shopping at Costco, health advocates are warning that this move may see increased alcohol consumption among Ontarians, and are calling for an alcohol strategy and greater funding dedicated to mitigating the potential harms of alcohol. Independent grocers also voiced their concerns about the associated bottle return/recycling requirement. They worry that the logistical burden of accepting, sorting, cleaning, and palletizing empty containers could make it financially unviable to continue selling alcohol. As a journalist, I’m committed to shining a light on the complexities of these issues and ensuring our communities are informed about the implications of policy changes. As I reflect on more than 32 years in the financial services industry—primarily working with organizations to build and execute employee benefit strategies—I have become increasingly passionate about advocacy. The current federal government has failed to address the empirical evidence showing that Canadians are struggling to prioritize their physical and mental health. This neglect has adversely impacted productivity and placed unsustainable pressure on our reactive healthcare system. I hope others in our industry will join the call to modernize the Medical Expense Tax Credit to include health, food, and financial literacy programming.
