Don’t assume your idea of “technical debt” is the same as everyone else’s. It’s a metaphor, and an imperfect one. But, if you can get consensus about what it means and how to use it effectively, it can be a useful tool for software architects designing new systems.

How about building a Cloud together on Hastings Street, Vancouver? The idea is to barely protect it by the glass transparent doors and have a colourful schema around the brand, attracting attention😄 And call it a collective or "Canada Made" or so?😄 I would call it a "Government" just for fun of things, but I am not an official of any :) yet 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ So let's call it iLiveMyLife Cloud maybe?😄 Who is in? Something you can’t do with Shopify flows’s native actions to make api calls is do anything with the response that you receive. Thats what this action in flow helper is for.

C: 🏗️ (still brainstorming) App Builds On Demand - pay monthly to get an app built (cheaper to get going, maybe around 2-4k per month over a year or so). Any of these sound desirable? Obvious flaws?

Your developer interview process sucks 🪠: Here’s how to fix it? 1/3 👍 Are top-tier developers slipping through your hiring net? How many "perfect on paper" developers crumble during technical assessments? This is going to be part 1 of a 3-part series on refining your hiring process, specifically focusing on how to effectively qualify a candidate's technical ability. In the past few months, I’ve worked with clients to improve their interview process, and these are some of the things that I think about when designing the interview process. 🟥 Not all developers fit in the square hole – Tech test vs. Paired Programming As a software developer and a recruiter, I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I’ve taken technical tests, given them, and done my fair share of pair programming interviews. The more I reflect on it, the clearer it becomes: these approaches test very different things. Depending on what you're looking for in a candidate, one method might be way better suited than the other. 🤖 Technical Tests are a great tool for verifying a developer can fulfil the duties of their role. You find tech tests resonate best with developers who can work independently and churn out work quickly in isolation. These candidates often excel at solving problems in a controlled environment but are not necessarily the candidates you want in a highly communicative or client-facing environment. These people will often be your top developers, and you don’t want to miss out on them! 🤝 Paired Programming, on the other hand, allows you to assess how someone interacts in real-time. It’s about collaboration, listening, and adaptability. When you are pair programming with a candidate, you can quickly gauge their soft skills, how they approach problems, and how they deal with the unexpected. More importantly, you get to see how they learn and improve in the moment. Often, I find candidates who would excel in a technical test can falter in the paired programming stage due to social anxiety, lack of soft skills, or difficulty thinking out loud under pressure, even though they may be highly skilled technically. 🤔 Ultimately, you need to be more diligent when making your interview processes. Think about what the role entails. What test would best suit that individual? Cater the process to them so they don’t fall through the cracks. 🎯Are you looking for someone to be a production machine? Or a team player who you can work closely with? If you want a team player, you’re going to have a pair programming interview where you can collaborate, teach, and see their process. If you're facing tight deadlines and need a developer who will take ownership of their space - implementing a technical test can help you find that person. Tomorrow I’ll follow this up with some horror story technical tasks I’ve come across and how we can improve them to be 1. Relevant, 2. Fair in terms of time commitment, and 3. Truly reflective of the real challenges developers face on the job.

If you didn't already know, Canada has a huge housing affordability problem, much worse than even the US. Apparently, the Province of British Columbia (the province that contains Vancouver, where this housing crisis is the worst in the country) has decided to implement broad legislation that raises the density floor across the entire province. Among the provisions of this law that I love the most: there will be no public hearings for development projects that abide by the new common plan. That means that NIMBYs with too much time on their hands and major Disney-villain energy can't clog up local government with complaints and slow down development projects for things like building a triplex on a single-family lot (which is now going to be allowed by right in this legislation). Or presumably for medium-sized apartment developments in close proximity to transit (also allowed by right now in this legislation). Time to take the fight to the NIMBYs: tell them that we don't care about their complaints. They don't get to prevent the rest of us from having an affordable place to live (oftentimes due to an undercurrent of racism btw). As a #StaffEngineer, part of your role is going to be helping maintain your #TestSuite. Two questions for you: 1) If your test suite is green, can you push to prod RIGHT NOW with a high degree of confidence that nothing will explode? 2) If your test suite is red after running your e2e tests ONLY ONCE APIECE, do you have a high degree of certainty that something is actually wrong? If your answer to either of these questions is anything but an immediate "yes," your test suite isn't doing its job! Wanna hear more? Of course you do! I had an interesting discussion with folks from the Chrome and Firefox teams about React Server Components and how they affect the web performance at the Toronto Web Perf Meetup yesterday. The DCL event seems to happen when the last bit of HTML reaches the browser, which can be seconds later. Until that happens, no module or deferred scripts are going to be invoked. Having the browser paint the page before all suspended components load is definitely a good feature, but it doesn't change the fact that we need to deliver all data as fast as possible. All the deferred or module scripts won't load until DCL happens. Have this in mind when you're suspending your components. It's easy to think "it will reach the browser whenever it does" since the users will be able to interact with the website before that, but don't adopt that mindset.

Is it just me, or does the IT job market in Vancouver feel completely stalled? I’ve been looking for a job for 7 months, and despite applying for numerous positions, I’ve had 0 interviews. It’s hard not to feel like my skills as a programmer are becoming worthless in this market. I’ve even started to wonder if my career in programming is over. For anyone else facing similar challenges, how are you staying persistent?
