Clients now expect faster contract reviews, real-time risk assessments and quicker regulatory guidance, according to "Keeping Pace: Law Firms in the Era of AI-Driven Business," a Law.com Pro Fellows report written by Aaron Boersma. Boersma is an innovation lead with Ford Motor Co., but he produced the report completely independent of, and not connected with, the automotive giant. The report noted that AI also is transforming business practices, as clients increasingly demand value-based models over traditional billable hours. While all the changes spurred by AI might seem unsettling to law firms, to remain competitive they should embrace the technology and make it a core part of their operations, the report said. "To handle the volume and speed of legal work generated by AI-driven businesses, law firms must adopt AI tools to bolster their core capabilities, not to replace them," according to the report, which predicts that AI will allow firms to manage larger workloads with minimal increases in manpower. David Simon, chief legal affairs officer of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, told Law.com that law firms have an obligation to clients to leverage tools like AI that can save time without sacrificing quality. "I expect outside counsel to do everything they can to be as efficient as possible," Simon said, just as he expects them to assign work to an associate when it doesn't require the expertise of a $1,200-an-hour partner. The report notes that while firms that swiftly embrace AI will gain a competitive edge, those that move slowly could affect their viability and become "corporate America's roadblock to growth."
