Here’s a closer look at each: Criticism: This involves attacking your partner’s character instead of focusing on specific behaviours. Example: Saying "You never help around the house" rather than "I feel overwhelmed when I handle all the chores alone." Contempt: This is the most damaging horseman and manifests as disrespect, mockery, or disdain. Example: Using sarcasm, eye-rolling, or belittling comments, such as "Oh, look who finally decided to clean!" Defensiveness: This occurs when partners play the victim or shift blame to protect themselves, often escalating conflict. Example: Responding to feedback with "It's not my fault; you always make me feel inadequate!" instead of taking responsibility. Stonewalling: This is when one partner withdraws from the conversation, shutting down emotionally and physically. Example: Giving the silent treatment or avoiding difficult discussions altogether, saying things like, "I just need some space." Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward change.
