Leaders and #connections - Health care from an upstream & regulatory lens. Thanks Agnes Grudniewicz for including me as a Guest Lecturer in your MHA 6360 Health Care in Canada course. A Vision to Transform Canada's Public Health System, by the Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada, provided the framework for an amazing discourse on the upstream (salutogenesis/wellbeing) and downstream (pathogenesis) attributes for building a better system. We also discussed the role Health Canada | Santé Canada plays. I shared the organization structure, our senior officials, and clarified key concepts such as the difference between equity and equality, what it means to take a population health approach, and the importance of collaborative governance in horizontal policies. What stood out for me was the level of engagement from our future leaders. All the comments and questions were thoughtful, we all had a better understanding and appreciation of the difference between programs and projects/policies, and I left knowing that this course is going to have the same profound and positive impact that it had on me when I had the opportunity to take it not so long ago. #buildbackbetter #futureleaders #healthcarematters

Day 3 of providing resources for improving healthcare for Indigenous people. In Canada, Indigenous people and people of colour are negatively impacted by systemic inequities in social inclusion, personal health, and access to and quality of health and social services. We also know that Indigenous people and people of colour have been over-represented in statistics on those who experience violence across Canada – for example, Indigenous women 15 years and older are 3.5 times more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women. This is an important and urgent health care issue. Family physicians have a role to play in addressing the systemic racism that Indigenous people and people of colour face every day in our country. Family physicians cannot treat the immediate health concerns of their patients without understanding and addressing the underlying social and economic factors that give rise to poor health. Health care professionals must take steps to eliminate the systemic barriers that prevent Indigenous people and people of colour from accessing the same services and care that are available to most Canadians. Some of these barriers are our own biases, which we must acknowledge and root out. Acknowledging racism in the system and in ourselves does not mean that we are bad people or that the system is "evil." It means that we recognize that their have been racist policies and ideas in place for hundreds of years that have absorbed into the culture and system that we must actively try to focus on and change. The BC College of Family Physicians is committed to promoting anti-racism and cultural safety and humility in the practice of family medicine. We provide resources on health equity and cultural safety and humility on our website. We urge our members to review these resources and consider how you can improve your practice. We must all be actively anti-racist. Our efforts towards anti-racism are only just beginning and there is much to be done. In Budget 2024, the Feds agreed to deliver $200 billion over 10 years to strengthen public health care. This year provinces and territories are receiving $52.1 billion. Where is the consensus built primary care strategy to guide use of this money? Where can dialogs sharing impact and lessons learned to guide future planning? A critical gap in mental health and substance use treatment is the lack of a digital pathway that links people across supportive agencies. To bridge this gap, the MH+A Alliance, with funding from Ontario Health, has engaged Calian Health to connect and integrate various EMR (electronic medical record) systems. With Launch 9 of Connect Care coming to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve been privileged to contribute to since before the program’s inception in November 2019. The Clinical Information System (CIS) known as Connect Care has transformed healthcare in Alberta. It now serves over 4.4 million Albertans across Alberta Health Services, Recovery Alberta, Covenant Health, Carewest, Capital Care sites, among many other affiliates, and is actively utilized by more than 120,000 healthcare providers and support staff.   This remarkable journey began for me in the field of Information Technology, where I transitioned from learning the system to actively building it to meet clinicians’ needs. It was a unique and rewarding experience to contribute directly to system design, crafting solutions that addressed the needs of both providers and patients. During this phase, I took a leadership role in developing and applying the innovative methodology of Clinical System Design—a new approach for the Connect Care team. Together, we overcame challenges, established clear plans, and delivered a system tailored to our goals.   After several years of foundational work, I embraced an opportunity to lead the Design, Readiness, and Implementation of Connect Care for the Addiction & Mental Health (AMH) specialty, a position I am honored to still hold today. This role has been the most challenging and rewarding chapter of my career. Although I come from a non-clinical background, I took pride in contributing to a clinical role, further strengthening my commitment to this mission. Additionally, I spearheaded efforts in the design, readiness, and implementation of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) subspecialty, ensuring that Connect Care is inclusive and representative of Alberta’s diverse population. Connect Care is paving the way for a new era in healthcare, built on the promise of “one patient, one record.” It bridges gaps between multiple health authorities and organizations, ensuring consistent and appropriately shared information throughout a patient’s healthcare journey. Furthermore, it empowers patients with access to their own health information through a user-friendly patient portal.   Now, nine launches and six years later, we have achieved an extraordinary milestone: Connect Care has become the largest integrated CIS in Canada and one of the largest globally. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished, and the profound difference Connect Care continues to make in healthcare delivery. Yet, our journey is far from over. The foundation we have built is solid, but there is always room for growth and innovation. As we look to the future, I am excited about the opportunity to enhance an already remarkable system through continuous improvement.
