CANADA’S FALLING PRODUCTIVITY Attached is an excellent article by Mark Wiseman. It is more balanced than many recent articles/papers on the subject of productivity, assigning responsility more widely. Some key observations: * our productivity is quickly falling in relation to our peers * there is a lack of competition in our economy * as a result of the last point point, corporations have not been pressed to be innovative and efficient. Some suggested steps: * eliminate inter-provincial trade barriers * encourage more foreign entrants by replacing the Competition Act test to prove a transaction is “of net benefit to Canada” to “not harmful to Canada” * agricultural subsidies/protections need to be reduced over time. In any event, they will be challenged again in the renegotiation of the USMCA Agreement in 2026.

I remember a time when displaying the Canadian flag was a symbol of pride and honor. Today, as we mark Canada Day, I look forward to celebrating our nation under new leadership. Over these challenging five years, I've focused on fatherhood and coaching individuals in personal growth and mindset development for health and fitness goals. It's been a heavy burden, but essential for survival. Here are three tips to stay on track with your goals during today's celebrations: 1️⃣ Start with a workout, fast until 1 PM, and drink 3 L of water before 2 PM to prepare for later indulgences. 2️⃣ Plan your alcohol intake and keep it under control – preparation is key to success. 3️⃣ Be mindful of food choices, opting for lean proteins and fats over carbs, especially considering the carb content in alcohol. The case of Amanda Leeann Porter, arrested earlier this month for impersonating a registered nurse and working at several hospitals in California, is reminscent of the case of Brigitte Cleroux here in Canada, whose story I used as a case study in "Screening for the One". It's also why you should conduct more than one kind of background check, starting with an identity verification. #BreadpricefixingScheme I read the news and it's shocking😳 #Unethical Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and its parent company George Weston Ltd. say they have agreed to pay $500 million to settle a class-action lawsuit regarding their involvement in a bread price-fixing scheme. The class-action case was brought against a group of companies that includes Loblaw and the Weston companies, Metro, Walmart Canada, Giant Tiger, and Sobeys and its owner, Empire Co. Ltd. The plaintiffs allege those companies participated in a 14-year industry-wide price-fixing conspiracy between 2001 and 2015, leading to an artificial increase in packaged bread prices. #lawsuits #commercial #inflation #Giantcompony #Foodprice #retailgrocerystores

Here’s an excellent summary of what pharmacy needs to do next by my friend Jaclyn Katelnikoff, BSc PMCOL, BSc Pharm, RPh She invited comments so here’s my YES AND…😊. I’d like to build on two of her points: 1) workflow change and 2) #PBM. What would you add, dispute or change? 1) I contend that moving to the #pharmacistatintake / #P1st workflow MUST be the #1 priority for all 12,000 pharmacies in Canada. Without P1st, even Alberta pharmacists lack the capacity to take on a larger portion of the primary care burden, or get beyond the paltry 3% of prescriptions they write despite 17 years of the highest scope and richest pharmacy services reimbursement in the world. Even if Ontario increases minor ailment assessments by 300% RPhs will write less than 1% of Rx’s in 2024. And where’s the time for chronic care? That’s not transformation. More scope without more time is meaningless. No other change comes close to P1st’s workforce multiplier impact. And minor ailment software platforms need the time P1st gives pharmacists to gain traction. Every Canadian pharmacy owner has the power choose to change tomorrow without anyone’s permission, extensive training or major renovations. If pharmacy won’t even change something completely within its power, why should governments offer more scope, money and a seat at decision-making tables for #primarycare transformation? 2) #PPNs and #PBMs must be explicitly outlawed by mirroring Quebec’s #Bill92.

“I’ll cripple you. I will cripple you.” That’s the threat issued by Harold Daggett, president of the International Longshoremen’s Association. The ILA wants better wages and a ban on automation to protect the jobs of union members. It appears the strike could begin tonight at midnight EST and is planned to last three weeks. Ports affected will stretch from eastern Canada down the east coast all the way to Texas. Mega retailers like Costco and Walmart have addressed the issue saying they have alternative plans ready to mitigate the effects of the strike. The last strike was in 1977 and many don’t understand the wide ranging impacts of such a move. The flow of goods in and out of the eastern U.S. will grind to a halt. Ships can be rerouted to the west coast but there will be delays and cost increases. There may be shortages, price hikes and layoffs as a result. Everything from building materials, fruit, cars and electronics could be affected. Now is a great time to stock up on essentials and stash away some extra cash in case your industry is affected. I have an amazing coworker with a 10-year old son undergoing a craniotomy today (05.02.2024). Though this is a personal request to ask my network to pray for "JP" - this is very much a work-related request. At 8 years old, "JP" got himself ready for school, had breakfast, took care of the dogs, and got on the bus while his Dad left very early for work, and an otherwise 'remote working' Mom was there for help. He did this for 3 consecutive days because "work" called Mom to a different state to lead an implementation. I was there during that implementation. I saw and heard how JP stepped up and took on great responsibilities for himself, his family, and even encouraged his Mom. I saw how Mom was sad to be gone, proud of her son, yet never waivered in her duties to lead. Today will be an even harder day on JP's Mom. More than being absent from him for a few days, she will feel helpless to do anything while the doctors remove a 3" x 3" mass from his brain. May I ask you to take time today and pray for JP, his family, and his doctor's? This may be a long road to recovery. Also, if you are a leader, may I ask you to remember the Moms and Dads that put the company mandates high on the priority list, knowing this is their livelihood, and sometimes pulls them away from family that rank even higher? Building a culture of trust, encouragement, compassion and understanding never interferes with building a culture of tenacity, achievement, responsiveness and growth. If anything, all those characteristics can compliment each other. So, please keep JP and his family in your thoughts and prayers today... and in weeks to come. According to Articles 121 through 124 of the Regulations respecting occupational health and safety (ROHS), establishments which employ 50 workers or more have an obligation to measure temperatures in the workplace and take necessary measures to prevent heat stress in workers. 🎉 Today marks my 2 year work anniversary with Smile Brands Inc. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for the growth opportunities I’ve had with such a supportive team and strong leadership. On a personal note, I've not only been focusing on my professional growth but also personal growth. I've recently taken up indoor top rope climbing, which has been a fantastic new challenge. Climbing shares many similarities with recruiting. In climbing, trust and strong partnerships are essential to achieving your goal. It's a team sport, just like recruiting, where everyone's contribution is crucial. You will inevitably encounter obstacles and need to overcome objections to reach the final objective. At times, you may experience a setback just as the goal seems within reach, but with support, you can get back up and try again.
