🔹 "The proposed changes would use height instead of FAR as a development control mechanism, which could potentially speed up approvals." 🔹 "Under a height-based framework, the development potential of a lot is determined by the permitted building height and required setbacks," staff explained. 🔹 "Land use designations and zoning districts would continue to determine permitted uses, except zoning districts would come with height limits under the new proposed framework. Heights would, of course, vary from area to area, such as four storeys or below for sites zoned R1, 20 storeys or lower for sites zoned R6, and 50 storeys or higher for sites zoned R9." 🔹 "For mixed-use sites, which the City anticipates will be delivering the bulk of Burnaby's new commercial space, an "overlay" framework will be used — an R8 (Residential) zone atop a C2 (Commercial) zone, for example — instead of the current practice of rezoning the entire site to one CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) zone. The heights, critically, would not "stack." 🔹 "The proposed approach to enabling mixed-use sites enhances flexibility, allows for various combinations of districts, and minimizes the need for CD Districts," said staff. "Where mixed-use sites are identified, the land use designation or zoning district with the most permissive height allowance would apply, rather than the cumulative heights of each district. A huge step toward a sustainable and resilient future! The first-ever Canada Green Buildings Strategy (CGBS) was launched last week, a groundbreaking initiative emphasizing energy efficiency, retrofitting, and reducing emissions in buildings and homes. The strategy aims to make life more affordable, combat climate change, and support good jobs across the country. It also seizes economic opportunities by promoting the use of more efficient and lower-carbon building materials and technologies.   Some key elements of the CGBS include:   • A $200 million investment in Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative projects over the next 5 years • Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB)’s Building Retrofits Initiative to provide attractive financing to reduce investment barriers and decarbonize buildings • Over $1 billion committed to low-interest and forgivable loans for deep energy retrofits and new affordable housing projects through the Canada Greener Affordable Housing Program and the Affordable Housing Fund • The $1.5-billion Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program (GICB) supports green and accessible retrofits, repairs, or upgrades to public community buildings in underserved areas   At UnitiWall, we applaud the actions taken by the Government of Canada to ensure every Canadian can live, work, study, and play in a place that is healthy, safe, climate-resilient, and affordable to heat and cool. The Climate Smart Buildings Alliance (CSBA), a joint project between EllisDon, RBC, and Mattamy Homes, is launching the Responsible Buildings Pact, a cross-industry agreement aimed at increasing the use of low carbon materials in the built environment 🙌 This initiative was unveiled this afternoon at the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council’s Building Lasting Change conference in Toronto, with over 20 companies committing to the Pact. “Recognizing the business realities everyone faces, the Pact is designed to ensure we are all doing our best to reduce the climate impacts of our industry, and to create more transparency and shared accountability across the value chain.” - David Messer, Director of Climate Smart Buildings Alliance. The Responsible Buildings Pact is an open, voluntary, industry-wide agreement for developers, consultants, contractors, and supporters interested in working together to reduce the embodied carbon of the buildings we create. Companies joining the Pact will commit to remaining educated on lower carbon materials, establishing a process to consistently evaluate whether lower carbon materials or design strategies can be used, and publicly reporting the results of their process and evaluations on an annual basis.
