Canada-based Netskrt has raised about $7.2 million ($10 million CAD) in its series A round. Netskrt focuses on delivering video to remote and rural communities and for specific video applications with hard-to-reach subscribers across rail operators and airlines. The company has been deploying caches into transportation environments and says it also sees a need to create a CDN footprint to help smaller ISPs manage live event traffic. ISPs serving remote, rural, exurban, or underserved urban areas are often too far away from the video source or CDN nodes for their customers to realize the benefits of the CDN, which is where Netskrt comes in. Rogers Communications Inc., the largest carrier in Canada with 7.3 million subscribers, said today it will offer Apple Inc.’s iPhone to its customers later this year. Rogers has about 37% of Canada’s approximately 20 million wireless subscribers and just reported robust profits, lower churn and an increase in ARPU, with a surge in data revenue. For Rogers, which emphasized its efforts to continue “strong growth,” the news may be important. But the relatively modest size of the Canadian market echoed the last two iPhone launches in Austria and Ireland. Details on timing and device and service pricing at Rogers remain to be announced. Rogers’ demurral had a familiar tone. “We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned,” said Ted Rogers, CEO at the carrier, in a prepared statement. But in the context of Apple’s planned expansion to international markets, Canada resembles another baby step, after the iPhone’s blockbuster launch at AT&T Mobility in the United States last year. The American carrier, with more than 71 million subscribers, has so far been the engine propelling Apple towards its goal of 10 million units by year’s end. Apple’s second, third and fourth steps were also fairly prodigious strides, as Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile in Germany, the U.K.’s 02, and France Telecom’s Orange launched the device late last year. I'm a little late to this party, but it's given me some more time to think about Apple and their #AI strategy. For starters, Apple Intelligence being usable on iPhone 15 Pro models is a good thing. It allows existing customers, that might be hesitant about on-prem AI, to test out the product on an existing device. Also, I'm sure Apple has a trove of data on *who* bought that specific model and is banking on gathering data about how they use it (and hoping they like it enough to drive them to buy the iPhone 16). Next is vertical integration: this is what Apple is all about - controlling their ecosystem. It makes sense that those in Cupertino want Apple iPhone users using Apple AI processed in Apple data centers on Apple silicon. They more of their user experience and business supply chain they have direct input on, the more resilient and consistent they can deliver. SK Telecom AI pet health diagnosis enters Canada: South Korean operator SK Telecom (SKT) extended availability of its AI veterinary diagnosis technology to North America, launching the service in Canada with plans to deploy tool in more than 100 pet hospitals across the country. Dubbed X Caliber, the technology uses AI to help veterinarians quickly diagnose X-ray images of dogs and cats. The operator described North America as “the world’s biggest pet market”, with data suggesting Canada has 28 million pets in total. SKT explained X Caliber devises a cloud-based system allowing veterinarians to access the results of the AI diagnosis on their mobile devices or PCs, eliminating the need for separate server or hardware at the hospital. Veterinarians will be able to analyse pet health in “approximately 15 seconds”, SKT stated, adding service’s AI diagnosis has a sensitivity of 86 per cent to 94 per cent. X Caliber entered the Australian and Indonesian market in May, and SKT explained it will start deploying the technology in more than 100 Canadian pet clinics in August through a partnership with provider of veterinary imaging software solutions Nuon & Nikki. The service was introduced in South Korea in 2022. SKT also struck a deal with US X-Ray equipment distributor Myvet Imaging following a successful proof-of-concept in New Jersey.
