Sales: With 19,243 sales, battery electric vehicles accounted for 77.5% of Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) sales vs. 5,602 plug-in hybrid vehicles (22.5%) in the first quarter of 2024. These figures contradict the assertion by some that sales of battery electric vehicles are declining in favor of plug-in hybrids. Exciting news from Ontario! ⚡️ The Ontario Government is taking important steps to strengthen investment in charging infrastructure in the province. 👏 Today's announcement tasks the Ontario Energy Board with exploring options for an Electric Vehicle Charger Discount Electricity Rate. 🚙 With the growing adoption of EVs in Ontario, it's crucial drivers have convenient and reliable charging access no matter where they live or drive in the province. 💰 A new Electric Vehicle Charger Discount Electricity Rate has the potential to bolster the business case for investing in EV charging infrastructure, particularly in rural and remote areas that are currently underserved, increase EV charger deployment and instill confidence in going electric. 🗓️ Starting in May 2024 the Ontario Energy Board will conduct public consultations on a new Electric Vehicle Charger Discount Rate with the intent of making the new rate available to public EV charging providers by January 1, 2026. https://bit.ly/3UfF216

Toyota has become an investor and founding member of IONNA, joining BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis to support the development of a high-powered North American EV charging network. IONNA aims to install 30,000 charging ports by 2030, with NACS and CCS connectors to accommodate all BEV drivers. CCS ports seem foolish to me since: - most EVs in North America are Teslas, - automakers are transitioning to Tesla’s NACS charge ports, - there are 25,156 Tesla Supercharger ports in the US already, according to an April 15, 2024, Motley Fool, - NACS offers a superior user experience and - Most CCS-equipped EV owners will likely own a NACS-to-CCS adapter. In celebration of🌍 #EarthDay 🌍 , we are thrilled to provide a progress update on EMC’s 2030 EV Action Plan. The 2030 EV Action Plan is an industry-led project of Electric Mobility Canada (EMC) and is intended to ensure Canada succeeds in the transition to electric mobility. Initially published in late 2021, the 2030 EV Action Plan was updated in August 2023 to adapt it to the evolving landscape. EMC is delighted to share the federal policy gains that have been made since its inception: • National ZE MHDV sales targets announced: 35% by 2030 and 100% by 2040 (March 2022) • ZE MHDV purchase incentive and awareness programs launched (July 2022) • CIB funding for public charging infrastructure (September 2022) • iZEV purchase incentive program extensions (2022 and 2024) • Creation of the Canadian ZEV Council in early 2023, EMC appointed member and co-leader of two working groups (March 2023) • Creation of a Pan-Canadian Grid Council (May 2023) • Canadian EV Availability Standard (adopted December 2023) • Multiple investments and tax credits in manufacturing. For example: o Volkswagen 90 GWh battery cell factory o 45 GWh Stellantis battery cell factory EMC is grateful to the members of its Government Relations Committee for their valuable input and support of this initiative. Their contributions are vital in moving the needle and bringing Canada several steps closer to fully transitioning to electric mobility. We have much more work ahead of us. Sales of zero-emission vehicles in Canada continue to climb. New data from S&P Global Mobility shows that sales in Q3 2024 reached 16.5% - and all time high. S&P predicts that EVs will make up 15.2 per cent of all light-duty vehicle sales in 2024. “This means that [in Q3 2024] approximately 1 in every 6 new cars registered in Canada was a ZEV,” reads the report. “This growth reflects a 14.4% increase in overall ZEV volume compared to the previous quarter, driven by a 15.1% rise in BEVs and a 12.4% increase in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).” As part of its long-term forecasting, S&P is projecting that, were Canada to maintain its current adoption trajectory, the country could reach 25.3 per cent new ZEV sales by the end of 2026 and more than 30 per cent by the end of 2027. #EVs #ElectricVehicles #Canada https://hubs.la/Q02Zl3Dd0

I pitched at #CityAge in #Vancouver a couple months ago about “The Unfortunate Truth About The Electrification of Everything & #NetZero” and here it is: 1) BC imported 20% of its electricity needs in 2023 —> this almost entirely came from dirty power generation sources (coal, natural gas, etc). 2) Electrification is growing faster than clean power generation can be added to the grid. Dirty Energy Generation (supplemented) is only way we can keep up with demand in the next 10 years (likely more). 3) Wind and Solar will play the biggest role net zero role in bringing more clean power generation to market. These projects are capital/time intensive and not able to keep up with demand from electrification push. 4) Other promising technologies that may play a bigger contributing role to #BCs #netzero goals are currently in their infancy (Carbon Capture, Small Modular Reactors, etc), and provide little to no real impact within the next 10 years. There is much debate around whether these exciting technologies will ever “get there” and become commercially viable. 5) If #BC and #Canada are actually serious about achieving their #NETZERO goals (and wants to keep up with the accelerating demand from electrification), we need to turn significant focus to smart technologies that can reduce/eliminate grid waste. 6) Smart connectors provide granular insight and control at the device level. Embedded AI driven software is able to reduce enormous amounts of power… as much as 30% of residential, commercial and industrial power usage Together, innovative solutions like this are able to reduce wasted energy use (causing grid stress) and help meet near term demand when we need to the most (NOW)! Great post from Ekta Meena Bibra. On the subject of consumer perception, it's also worth noting that there has a real rise in misinformation about EVs, too. Chances are you've heard or read something about: - on a lifecycle GHG basis EVs aren't any better than gas cars... - unless your power grid is 100% clean then driving an EV doesn't help... - there are insufficient metals/minerals for EV batteries... - mining for metals/minerals makes EVs no better—or even worse—for the environment than gas cars... - EVs will collapse the power grid... - EVs dont' work in the cold; the batteries quickly degrade; they all catch on fire, etc. etc. etc... There are loads of myths circulating out there and it's hard to fathom they aren't having an impact on consumer perceptions. Statscan reports 53% jump in EV (BEV and PHEV) registrations in first quarter…great news! We need continued uptake by Canadians for the more than 7O ZEV models available supported by government efforts with respect to charging infrastructure and incentives to continue to transition the fleet.
