Alexi Secures $11 Million USD Series A Funding to Accelerate AI-Powered Legal Technology Innovations Alexi  (www.alexi.com), a Canadian legaltech company and leader in generative AI for legal research and litigation tasks, today announced an $11 million USD ($15 million CAD) Series A fundraise. The round is led by Drive Capital, with participation from existing investors including Draper Associates, and brings Alexi’s total funding to over $20 million. In addition to the raise, Chris Olsen, Partner at Drive Capital, will join the company’s Board of Directors. “The rate of innovation happening at Alexi is truly astounding. Canada's Bill C-27 — a key privacy law in the country — is slowly making its way through the legislation process, and it has big implications for everyone. The last update to privacy law was made in the late 90s, and, "by and large, it's accepted that Canadian privacy law at this stage is out of date," said Dr. Michael Geist at #meshcon, in conversation with Joan Vlasschaert. As technology and AI continue to advance, privacy implications for some of these technologies have been at the forefront of people's minds, he added, and, "suddenly it's not just a privacy bill, it's a privacy and AI bill." The bill is taking a long time to make it through the House and the Senate, but it's raising questions about individual rights and ethical concerns. There are risks associated with AI as it gets used for hiring and healthcare, where potential biases can affect life and death. Regulations and checks and balances are necessary, but who should be making these decisions? "I'm pretty cynical about the government's approach to a lot of digital policy, and one of the reasons for that is that it has tended to establish very high level standards and then left it to somebody else to figure out all the details." Dr. Michael Geist He suggests corporate responsibility is key to addressing these concerns, but many are rushing forward instead of risking missing out the benefits and potential profits. "My guess is that for many they're simply moving quickly," says Geist. "This is just seen as another technological implementation within a broader stack of technology implementations.” He says there’s room to say, “pump the brakes a little bit or to say, ‘Hey, are there other alternatives.’” #DigitalTransformation #innovation

How are currently regulations addressing the challenges that AI poses in the area of intellectual property, particularly patents and copyrights? This is a hot topic that is revolutionising industries, especially in the legal industry. There is no clear regulation for lawyers using AI, with different countries taking different approaches. In Canada, a rule has been put in place after a lawyer used in AI to create fake case law. However, in the UK, a senior judge experimented with using AI to speed up judgement writing.. When it comes to intellectual property, issues arise with parenting AI systems and whether AI can be considered an inventor. Copyright I also a concern, with generative AI potentially infringing on the creative works of others. The debate on how to protect IP in the era of AI is ongoing, with no clear answers yet.
