Having already shared the Australian and Phillipines pickleball scene, today we share some insight into the state of Pickleball Canada 🇨🇦 With over approximately 1,3 million pickleball players, Canada is the second largest pickleball Nation on Earth. British Columbia leads the way with 76 of the total 302 pickleball facilities in the country, followed by Ontario (52) and Quebec (48) 💥 Some notable sponsors driving the growth include Franklin Sports, Heur foods, Myoflex, Neal Brothers Foods, Think turkey, withinUs™ and Rescue 7 👏🏽 What do you think of the future of pickleball in Canada? 🇨🇦

On June 12th the Globe and Mail published an article by Stephen Whyno on how the cost of youth hockey is reducing registration in this great game. Today the Globe published the response below. Much evidence about the long term damage done by bodychecking has been published in the last decade (including the one from the legendary Dr. Charles Tator at the link below). Reporting on this research and related governance issues in the Globe has included writers: Roy MacGregor, Paul Waldie, Marty Kinkenberg, Rita Trichur, Rachel Brady, Donna Spencer, and others. The issue of bodychecking in boys hockey is a classic knowledge translation (KT) challenge, if not cognitive dissonance. On one side you have the inertia of the custom, culture and traditions of the game and on the other side you have unequivocal data and scientific evidence that its doing avoidable harm and reducing enrolment. Boys hockey registration has been dropping for many years. We are giving consent for minors to do things we would not consent to, for ourselves, as adults. These are not new problems. Nor is the governance of Hockey Canada. On Father’s Day I would encourage parents to consider the information and urge Hockey Canada to overcome the inertia and do the right thing by removing body checking from boys hockey. (And while they are at it make their membership inclusive by adding representation from persons with disabilities). Individuals choose to break the rules and violate their true accountabilities, not systems. It was easy to predict that in the aftermath of the women’s soccer cheating scandal, Canadians would be curious about how something like this could come about. Where was the oversight? Isn't there a system in place to stop this? Who is responsible for this coach’s behaviour? This is not how Canada behaves! There is, without question, a need to learn more about how, why and who. What we have to understand, as Canadians, is that behind a flawed coach or leader, we will not always find organizational dysfunction. In my mind, we move to this conclusion far too quickly. There are so many good people in the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic system. People you would want on your team. People who have made incredible sacrifices to support coaches and athletes in pursuit of excellence and the love of sport. In my experience, the vast majority could not be more clear on their accountabilities. We need to celebrate them far more often. We need to understand what contributes to these tragic situations. However, we shouldn't rush past the people on the front lines. A greater focus on those who ultimately decided to break rules or act inappropriately would serve us well.

While medal victories might tend to dominate the headlines, there’s much more to the #OlympicGames than winning and losing. The three core values of the #Olympicmovement are #excellence, #respect and #friendship. There’s no podium necessary for an athlete to display one, two or even all three of those traits. As a sports coach or leader, the quality of your relationships with those you lead directly impacts their performance. This is backed by research - a study conducted by Penny Werthner on the 2008 Canadian Olympic team. The findings were clear: A productive coach-athlete relationship was the most significant contributor to a medal-winning performance or personal best. When there's a foundation of mutual trust, respect, and understanding between a coach/leader and their people, amazing things happen: The communication clicks.  Each party intuitively knows what to expect from the other.  The motivations and environments for optimal performance are aligned. But it goes beyond just rapport. Elite sports coaches and leaders have the emotional intelligence to adapt their style to each individual's needs. They take the time to truly understand how people process information and what pushes their buttons - then flex their approach accordingly. It's about creating the right cognitive and emotional conditions for everyone to thrive. Relationship-building is not separate from performance development; they're inextricably linked. You'll never unlock someone's full potential until the relationship piece is firmly in place. Prioritise developing that bond with every player, employee, or team member you work with. The performance will naturally follow.
