You can't have the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) credentialing everyone under the sun and not expect the consumer to get even more confused. Could this be the dark-horse issue that finally gets Alberta and Quebec to endorse a National Securities Regulator, so we could have one consistent regime of titles and qualifications across the country (sorry, that was a joke, OF COURSE that's never going to happen!). I guess the good news is that from a place where titles and qualifications mean nothing to investors, things can only improve... Interesting discussion with David Rosenberg about Canada and US markets. We both agree the next stop for the BoC is to cut rates to "neutral" ASAP. I think the policy rate will be close to 2% by mid next year, the market has it priced to drop to 3.5% by then. There is still lots of money to be made in the bond market. The Fed is trickier, but it appears the Fed will signal a September rate cut this week.

#alternative_investments There’s nothing like a US selloff on a Canadian holiday Monday. Last week’s equity drawdowns began when Canadians were still enjoying the August long weekend, though it’s unlikely that anybody in asset management was still enjoying themselves that Monday. The week of volatility that followed, with recovery rallies, false starts, and whipsaw swings were enough to give even seasoned investors a bit of whiplash. Watching his own RRSP last week, Mike Woollatt says that he was reminded of a key tenet of his work: that private assets offer volatility offsets. Woollatt is the managing director and head of Canada at Hamilton Lane, one of the world’s largest private market investment managers. baudroie Inc.  (4413): Sales Y/Y +40% and OP Y/Y +60% vs. P/E 53x This high-growth IT infrastructure company can be a difficult stock to evaluate, with a myriad of positives offset by several negatives.   Positives:   ·      The industry-leading sales (FY2/17-24 CAGR of 24%) and profit growth (OP growth CAGR of 40%). ·      Pioneered a new graduates training system to efficiently compete in the IT Infrastructure space ·      Specialized in advanced technology area (i.e. higher growth) of System Integrations ·      Potential Move to TSE Prime   Negatives:   ·      High management ownership of 71.6%/low liquidity (but can imply quick decision-making). Mitigant: Also, management’s public comment re: TSE Prime move (timing unknown) suggests that management fully intends to raise the liquidity of its shares by about 10% to meet the Prime Market standard of 35%. ·      High valuation (53X for FY2/25, 42x for FY2/26) ·      Competitors replicate the company’s business models, especially the new graduate’s training system. Who's getting funded in Canadian Fintech? 👇 Financeit, Canada’s largest home improvement lender increased their securitization warehouse with Goldman Sachs by $200m to $700m. Goldman Sachs became the majority owner of Financeit in 2017 before selling the company to InterVest capital partners in 2022. Mave, a Toronto based AI assistant for real estate agents & brokers, raised $2m led by N49P Ventures and Relay Ventures. Boardy, a professional networking startup with a voice interface, raised $4m. Part of the founding team also founded Clearco, the businesses financing company. Parachute, a subprime consumer lender, raised $1.5m from Adrenaline Fund and Highline Beta. The 2,500 - 4,000 independent sponsors currently active in the US (compared to 9,000+ PE shops) are in the spotlight again. Citrin Cooperman’s 2024 report on their activities is out. What a read. Isponsors are now truly moving the needle in the lower mid-market. They've clawed and gnawed their way there, by earning the respect of sellers and by offering a welcomed alternative to corporates and traditional PEs. For years, owners who run great businesses have been bombarded by corporates and traditional PEs, whose approach has largely been the same (and probably has gotten more cookie-cutter despite the increased competition). If owners haven’t sold to them, it’s partly because they haven’t liked what they’ve heard from them. It also explains why isponsors can win deals against their competitors’ much deeper pockets and reach. The stat sheet of isponsors for the year is remarkable: - 3 in 4 report having returned 3x+ MOIC to their investors, 40% of them over 10+ years, based on 1) proprietary sourcing; 2) a strong relationship with the owners; 3) experience in their sector - 2 in 3 find the discipline to not go above 6x under any circumstances, and still close, which is impressive given the competition for quality assets - 3 in 4 get deals done without partnering with another isponsor, highlighting the strength of their operations Thanks for putting this together Sylvie Gadant, John A. With the supposed introduction of the CSLR next year, I thought a little deep dive into the growth in fees to provide advice each year might be interesting. Keep in mind, these fees don't include licensing fees - which by definition should cover everything. These additional fees have started creeping in since 2017, and have crept up quite quickly. Once I had a bit of a clear picture, I asked some mates in medicine and law to provide the same. What became clear is the fees it takes to practice in advice in Australia are on a wild upward trajectory. And what I'm sure of, is if this latest 'levy' is introduced next year, we all know it will be baked in immediately. It's quite clear government bodies aren't particularly interested in reducing revenue once a tap is turned on. So this idea that a four-year levy will magically disappear in 2029 is more than likely not going to happen. So, what can Ensombl do? We don't do advocacy. There are some great minds already tackling things head on. But we can help elsewhere. Our goal is to save time for every stakeholder who touches CPD. As you can imagine, that's a few people. From compliance and learning teams inside of licensees, to advisers who complete the education. The upcoming CPD platform will remove the embarrassing waste of your time dealing with PDFs and automate the admin.
