🚀 A dietary supplement that has come into favour with athletes and fitness fanatics is caffeine gum, which says it is good for improved performance, more alertness and convenience in potentially having a bettered performance. ☕️ Caffeine gum is just what it sounds like, chewing gum that contains caffeine. Nicotine in the chewing gum is absorbed rapidly through the mucous membrane of the mouth, meaning that cognitive effects from it occur sooner than with coffee or energy drinks which the stomach must first digest. 💥 Athletes believe that it has several advantages over ordinary caffeine sources, such as rapid absorption, immediate alertness, and improved physical performance, increasing strength and power and convenience as well as simplicity in keeping up a regular dosage. 💥 According to Barreto et al. (2023) their study determined the effect of Caff-gum on exercise performance, using a systematic review and meta-analysis. It found that Caff-gum was effective when provided in doses 3 mg/kg BM and within 15 min prior to initiating exercise. 💥 In this research Caff-gum was shown to be an effective ergogenic aid for trained individuals involved in both endurance and strength and power exercise. Noting supplement dose and timing modified the efficacy of Caff-gum. 💥 Yang et al. (2015) noted caffeine, a diuretic, can cause water loss in the body. 💥 Mordi et al. (2022) showed the effect of 300mg chewing gum enhances cognitive performance and reduces simple reaction time, while also increasing alertness. It also improves mental functions and cognitive functions after sleep deprivation. 👉Overall, caffeine gum is a popular supplement among athletes and fitness enthusiasts, but should be used responsibly and in moderation. 📚Reference: 1. Dietary supplement sales are on the rise, and so is liver toxicity. We can no longer ignore the negative effects and health risks associated with low bioavailability ingredients. These ingredients put a tremendous strain on the liver because the body cannot use them efficiently and must eliminate them. Often, people take mega doses to counteract the low bioavailability, which creates toxic metabolites in the process. Consumers invest their hard-earned money in dietary supplements, expecting health benefits, but the reality often falls short. This is a serious health concern that demands attention. A study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences highlighted the rising danger of liver toxicity from dietary and herbal supplements. The study examined 296 different HDS products (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbal, and other supplements) and found that 67 of them (approximately 23%) were linked to liver injury in at least one documented case. The increase in these liver problems correlates with the growing use of supplements, showing a proportional relationship between HDS sales and reports of liver injury. The study emphasizes that low bioavailability of these supplements can lead to higher concentrations of harmful substances in the liver, putting extra strain on this vital organ and increasing the risk of serious liver damage. A recent study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) highlights the re-emergence of scurvy, a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, especially in older adults. The study, led by researchers from the University of Toronto, draws attention to the fact that scurvy is no longer a disease of the past but can affect individuals today, particularly those facing food insecurity, mobility issues, or social isolation. The case study focused on a 65-year-old woman suffering from fatigue, leg pain, and skin discoloration. With limited mobility and a diet lacking fresh produce, she was found to have severe vitamin C deficiency. Her symptoms improved significantly after starting vitamin C supplementation. The researchers urge clinicians to consider scurvy in elderly patients experiencing abnormal bleeding, weakness, and other nonspecific symptoms. This case highlights the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly for older adults with limited access to fresh food. Smoking, another factor contributing to vitamin C deficiency, also exacerbates the risk.
