🚀 Day 4/10 of University of Waterloo's MDEI Design Sprint ✅ Today marked significant progress in our journey to transform CIBC's app by integrating user-centric gamification strategies for self-servicing: ✅ Strategic Meeting with Lennart Nacke: With only 1 day allocated for testing tomorrow, we optimized our research strategy and validated our gamification assumptions with UX and gamification expert, Lennart. His insights were instrumental as we refined our approach; focusing on user needs and clarifying our messaging around gamification.* ✅ Mid-Fi Prototype Development: We've developed a robust mid-fi prototype featuring over 10 screens, aiming to enhance user engagement through gamification - designed to make digital banking more intuitive and rewarding. I tested the flows and updated interactions as needed to ensure a smooth experience for users during testing. ✅ Usability Testing Plan: I setup our testing on two critical scenarios, enrolling and learning. While we could test for many more, I think it's important to understand that not everything's a priority! 🛠 Tools of the Trade: To save time on the tedious task of building out a Google Form, I leveraged OpenAI to convert our testing plan in Word into a script. I then ran the script to create a form in seconds that will help us to track results - saving us valuable time for more important tasks like focusing on the questions and design. *Key learning: Don't know? Last month, I co-hosted and moderated the Vancouver Tech Ecosystem Roundtable with Careers In Technology and Innovation, Lighthouse Labs, Tech2Step & Vancouver.dev. Instead of creating our own agenda, we asked the community through a survey what they wanted to hear. Then, I had the privilege of moderating the panel with Chris Neumann, Joshua Nilson & Tanis Jorge. After the event, we compared our notes and compiled a report. Today, we’re releasing our findings. In Montreal, a taxi has a base rate of $4.10, then $2.05/km and $0.77 per minute waiting. I hate to break it to the CBC but that's also an algorithm. Any pricing scheme is going to be better for some and worse for others. And like with almost all AI, transparency or explainability is an illusion. Is it better to know how your taxi fare is calculated, as above, but have no idea how much the trip will cost, or to know how much the trip will cost but have no idea how it's calculated? It's not about the underlying technology, or what constitutes an algorithm, it's the impact that matters. It would be a very cool study to look at who benefits from one-size-fits-all time and distance pricing, vs. who benefits from customized pricing. Remote work enabled me to hire an expert team of UX designers and researchers dispersed across Canadian cities. It allowed me to support employee wellbeing so that precarious child care situations, creative passions and needs at home could be balanced with flexible work. We never missed a deadline; our work was always of a top quality. I could hire for the best talent and recruit from outside government. I couldn't offer the pay of private sector, but I could offer a healthy work environment and flexibility - something which many creatives (and folks in general) covet more than money. A slow creep to the end of remote work will make this impossible for many managers working in the federal government in IT. And equally, it will make it hard to retain managers and executives who are also subject matter experts in the field. It's really disappointing to see, and I hope there will be flexibility given so that we can retain the best talent in house. When you foster a work environment that is enticing to IT talent, you build real functional IT capacity within the government. This is the work that lights me up. Most of the time, we’re creating software for companies, often without seeing the people who use it. It’s rewarding, sure, but sometimes it feels like building for an invisible crowd. Working on Post School was different. We just wrapped up the Fall 2024 37signals meetup. Everyone from a dozen countries in the same city (Montreal, this time) for a week of hanging out, working together, and sharing meals. All organized and managed in a single Basecamp project that everyone had access to. A message board for deliberate announcements everyone needed to know. A chat room for casual whatever, quick links, bad jokes. To-dos (all done) for assigning lightning talks and our peer appreciation and recognitions. Docs & Files for recordings of key sessions, goals for the week, the floor plan for the venue, a spot for everyone to share photos, hotel confirmation information + check-in/out dates, and the overall agenda for the week.
