💥 Two years after Tim Horton’s settled a class action in Canada for sharing location data through its use of the Radar SDK in its app… 💥…And two years after Greenley vs. Kochava claimed the Kochava SDK intercepts consumers’ location data when using mobile apps 💥…Bender vs. Twilio claims the Segment SDK collects personal information in a similar fashion. Are class action plaintiffs taking up the cause of SDK liability? Or are these flukes? In Bender vs. Twilio, Noah Bender downloaded and used the Calm meditation app on his cell phone. He later claimed the Segment SDK intercepted sensitive communications between himself and Calm. Segment is designed for developers to collect data , including search terms, search results, keystrokes, button presses, page views, and consumers’ names and email addresses. Bender is suing Twilio for violating America's Wiretap Act, the California Wiretap Act, and California's Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CDAFA). This may be the Calm before the storm for class actions. Bender's complaint alleges over 11,000 app developers have integrated Segment into apps for shopping, productivity, gaming, and mental health. In Montreal, a taxi has a base rate of $4.10, then $2.05/km and $0.77 per minute waiting. I hate to break it to the CBC but that's also an algorithm. Any pricing scheme is going to be better for some and worse for others. And like with almost all AI, transparency or explainability is an illusion. Is it better to know how your taxi fare is calculated, as above, but have no idea how much the trip will cost, or to know how much the trip will cost but have no idea how it's calculated? It's not about the underlying technology, or what constitutes an algorithm, it's the impact that matters. It would be a very cool study to look at who benefits from one-size-fits-all time and distance pricing, vs. who benefits from customized pricing. When I joined Thinkific's Performance team, our mission was clear: improve endpoint latency to enhance the experience for our creators. In it, he shared a five-year roadmap on how Shopify tackled performance and scaling challenges—a roadmap that became invaluable to us. Using the best practices and open-source tools Simon’s team developed, we made impactful improvements to our platform’s performance. It’s a great reminder that learning from those who’ve faced similar challenges is one of the best ways to grow as an engineer. When I spoke to Christian (Chris) Bach at the CMS Connect Conference in Montreal this past August, we dug into the unfolding roadmap of #composable architectures. Netlify – the company he helped found with Mathias Biilmann Christensen – has been at the forefront of shaping that journey, and it continues to pioneer the evolution. That was made abundantly clear at the #NetlifyCompose2024 event last week. There were some notable announcements, but one of the coolest new offerings unveiled by the modern #webdevelopment platform is its #AI-Assisted Publishing. It effectively streamlines the tedious, multi-tool juggling act of converting #content drafts from tools like Google Docs into web-ready pages, and even offers some slick audience #personalization capabilities. When combined with its built-in visual editing capabilities, it's clear that the platform is continuing to evolve its value to developers and content creators – particularly as more choice and automation enter the competitive field. The company also introduced what it calls Async Workloads, which empowers developers to construct durable, event-driven workflows seamlessly (and serverlessly) on any Netlify site. It also revealed an expanded library of in-app integrations via its Netlify Extensions ecosystem, which complemented partner announcements at the event. Well NVIDIA is now worth more than the GDP of Canada and in fact, more than 14 of the G20. So what is behind this insane growth and valuation? 1. Exponential requirements for growth. If we look at "GPT5" the needs will be far more than GPT4. From GPT2 to GPT4 OpenAI progressively added orders of magnitude more computing power to calculate the models. Rough estimates are GPT4 used 3,000 to 10,000x the compute power compared to GPT2 2. Data centers aren't nearly big enough...by a lot. GPT4 benefitted from having a lot of excess compute in existing data centers. But the next models will need compute thousands of times bigger. Think $100b or $1T data centers. 3. Google, Microsoft, Amazon are investing billions (>10b each) to grow the data centers to meet the demands. And now I'll let you guess who is supplying those chipsets.... I’ve changed the way I think about internal developer portals over the past 18 months. Ever since I co-founded Port IO with Zohar Einy, I was very focused on explaining the core pillars of Port and that we let you build any data model, developer experience, scorecard or automation. And while Port’s flexibility is still at the heart of the product, my thinking about it has profoundly changed. Today, I don’t talk about the service catalog or developer self service actions as if they are two discrete options you need to choose from. Actually most of the developer experiences we showcase in our open demo are a mixture of everything a portal offers: a scattering of scorecard views, data abstracted from external systems, a few software catalog entities, a relevant self-service action. Almost every page under ‘catalog’ is a full use case that provides developers, managers and leaders with easy to consume golden paths. Just getting around to the last bits of Christopher L. Trudeau's Django in Action for Manning Publications Co. that I hadn't read yet. This text is a wonderful companion to the stellar Django documentation, and brings with it approachable and compelling considerations for why to work on the web, how to think about the organization and scale-out of your project, and more. If you're someone who, like me, wants to spin up quickly (or, in Christopher's words, using the "minimum understanding of technology" approach) and you're picking up Django, this book is definitely one for you. Super interesting (and technical) breakdown on how the folks at ClickHouse are transforming the simple, flexible JSON format into something that can be leveraged at hyperscale. An excellent example of how sometimes scale can make you do crazy things.

You don’t need to build complex tests to build performance comparisons. This is by far the most practical tests I ve come across that explains Databricks seemingly cost effective and performant in practical use cases.

I've personally seen these for real customers. Oracle has delivered these astounding savings to many customers. Of course one wonders if they're buying a quality product (is it too good to be true is the question). This is Oracle my friends - you'll buy the best cost-efficient product. There's NOT a single Oracle Cloud offering that's inferior to the competition. Our database offerings set the benchmark for performance, cost, price/perf, scalability, availability, reliability, ... We don't abandon our customers who run legacy applications, while we allow them to innovate at the speed of Cloud without breaking the bank. If this post is too good to be true, I'd like to be proven wrong. Fair?

Tecton 1.0 has officially launched! Congrats to the team on this significant milestone. 1.0 is our first release with both predictive ML and generative AI capabilities.
