The second of four amazing guest speakers that joined our SMGT 204 - Sport Event Management course at Saskatchewan Polytechnic this semester was: Sandra Murray-MacDonell, CEO, Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association The purpose of the course is to gain the skills required to plan and manage a sport event. Sandra shared about Risk Management in Sport Events. She shared about the basics as well as some fantastic specific advice on how to mitigate against specific risks. Looks like Ontario Soccer CEO Johnny Misley and his organization believe in the “importance of inclusivity.” In keeping with this ideology, perhaps he and his organization should consider the following: - 2021 median annual household income for Canadian Indigenous populations: $55,600 CAD per year (https://lnkd.in/g3TWjuAd) - 2022 average annual fee for the “Ontario Player Development League” (OPDL; the “High-Performance Pathway” in Ontario): $4,447 (https://lnkd.in/ggGm42r8) Thus, for the average Canadian Indigenous family to register one child, for one year, in Ontario Soccer’s “Development League,” they would need to spend roughly 9% of their annual income, effectively making it impossible for Indigenous Canadians to be “included” in the “Talented Player Pathway” run by Mr. Misley and his organization (both of which, of course, believe in the “importance of inclusivity”). Aside from virtue signalling, Ontario Soccer does not actually care about “inclusivity.” Change my mind.

🧠 **The Mental Side of Hockey: Building Skills for Life!** 🏒 I recently had the opportunity to work with the Oakville Hornets U13 girls hockey team, leading a mental skills training session focused on key concepts that help young athletes develop resilience, focus, and confidence both on and off the ice. Here are a few key takeaways from the session: 1. **Focus on What You Can Control** Hockey is full of variables you can’t control, but we focused on channeling our energy into what we *can* control—our effort, attitude, and preparation. This shift in mindset can make all the difference in both performance and well-being. 2. **The 3R Routine: Recognize, Release, Refocus** Mistakes happen to everyone, but the 3R routine helps players bounce back quickly: - **Recognize** when you’re losing focus. - **Release** the frustration through a physical action, like a deep breath. - **Refocus** on the next play. 3. **Visualization for Success** Visualization is a powerful tool. We practiced mentally rehearsing key moments in a game—visualizing success to build confidence before stepping onto the ice. 4. **Emotional Awareness with the Traffic Light System** We used the traffic light system to help players recognize their emotional states: - **Green** = Focused and ready - **Yellow** = Distracted, but can refocus - **Red** = Overwhelmed and needing to reset Mental skills training isn’t just for elite athletes; it’s essential for athletes at every level. By building mental toughness early, these players are better prepared to handle the pressures of competition and grow both as athletes and individuals. 💪🏒 Thank you to the Oakville Hornets for the opportunity to work with an enthusiastic group of young athletes! I love making these 60 second success stories for two reasons: 1. It is no surprise that I am a big proponent of the values and benefits of amateur sport - including the mental and physical health benefits, the development of skills including team play and resiliency, along with the terrific way sport builds communities and connections. In BC, quality, safe, and inclusive amateur sport experiences are delivered by viaSport Designated Sport organizations. These 72 provincial organizations have met minimum standards through a comprehensive evaluation review designed to promote accountability, integrity, and transparency to its members, athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers, sponsors and the general public. This evaluation includes a review of strategies and polices around governance, coaching & officiating, participation, and athlete development — all supported by volunteer Board of Directors. As you contemplate summer sport programming, or looking at options for the fall, please consider programs offered by these organizations. Tomorrow is the carbon budget for city of Edmonton we should be talking about the housing and other ways to be carbon neutral. But we have no metrics from the global carbon budget one that is a deficit running at risks never experienced before. The recent headline from the COP 29 is we are not meeting the target of 1.5degrees Celsius. If it seems like they are side stepping it they surely are. And making a budget notwithstanding that won’t matter if we are warming to the future where we can’t work or can’t salvage the homes that we build to house the additional 220,000 people who have come here. Our revenues are “no longer aligned” and the structural variances and the impact of this as much as an increase of 13% tax levy. (Which the city has found some ways to cut that to 8.1 %). There are a range of funding options, the finances and approaches to reductions to reduce costs. I am hoping the council will support the community and the updates to the capital budget irrespective of the provincial funds in arrears and non-residential which will be recovered and will need to have the opportunity to share these concerns over the carbon budget. I frankly don’t think they have looked for this in the past. Is this a book review? I am not sure, but I am compelled to share my thoughts on these 2 books. Quick side story- when I was involved with hockey here in Winnipeg, I participated in a program that was somehow about elevating talent in the province (don't remember the specifics). The thing I recall that I took away was this: If you want to improve the experience of kids playing hockey AND improve their overall skill level, you need to help coaches get better at coaching. Fast forward to now and after following smart people on LinkedIn and reading 1 and 1/2 of the books pictured here, I am picking up on the same theme: For better, more productive, happier sales professionals that stick around and continue to produce for your company, help the sales leaders get 'even' better at leading their sales teams As we see in sports, great players don't necessarily make great coaches. In fact I would argue that it's the players who make a career with border line talent who make the best coaches. They had to work harder than everyone else and really think about what they needed to do in order to stick around and be successful. Back to the point of my latest sales rant: strong leadership, in all aspects of business, is critical to success. In a profession that lacks formal education or a degree, usually has an underinvestment in training and coaching/mentoring and is often looked down upon within (and outside of) organizations, strong leadership is even more essential to success. And while Mike Weinberg makes many, many great points in his books, the one I am going to highlight is this: sales leaders need to be trained and coached in order to best be able to support and lead their teams. Sales leadership IS NOT about just activity #'s and data nor is it just about being obsessed with CRM 'stuff'. Coaches and leaders are on the ice, field and courts with their teams. They are side by side with them, Coaching them. Supporting them. Reviewing what worked and what didn't. And to be best equipped to lead the sales teams, sales leaders need help too. The skills that made you a great player or sales leader ARE NOT the same skills that allow you to best support and coach your team. Maybe, just maybe, if I had had better coaching I could have been a better goalie 😀 (I can't write this with a straight face). Let's not continue to make the same mistakes with our up and coming sales leaders and sales professionals. We do this by investing in them to be the best versions of themselves - and in doing so enabling them to really help others. Note: Both of these books are easy reads. They are full of real life sales experiences and 'truths from the trenches'. If you're serious about becoming a better sales professional and sales leader, definitely worth the read. Friday Fun Fact: The Iconic Stanley Cup (NO…not THAT one.) Tomorrow the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers begin play in the National Hockey League Finals where the winner takes home the Stanley Cup. Don’t confuse this seasonal attention to the 132-year-old trophy with the year around hype given to the wildly popular Stanley thermos that likely you or friends are toting everywhere. In 1913, William Stanley Jr. created the Stanley all-steel vacuum flask, as a result of his work with transformers, during which he discovered that a welding process he was using could be used to insulate a vacuum bottle with steel instead of glass. The green “bottle” became a fixture in the company’s marketing campaigns historically targeted workmen and those participating in outdoors activities in its marketing. As recently as 2012, Stanley mentioned that its products resonated with “a 30-year-career veteran policeman” and “a retired Army soldier.” How did Stanley’s vacuum bottle evolve from an essential part of workdays, road trips and outdoor adventures to icon driving Stanley's annual sales from $70 million in 2019 to an estimated $750 million in 2023? Stanley thermoses have become popular for several reasons, including their quality, durability, and social media to build community. The 40oz Quencher Stanley introduced in 2016 became an internet phenomenon. It became wildly popular initially by word of mouth, and now trends on social organically (#StanleyCup hashtag now has 7.2 billion views worldwide), with people posting about their favorite hydration accessory. Influencers certainly play a part in Quencher success as well. The thermoses have also become a trendy fashion accessory for Gen Z girls, and seeing celebrities and friends use the same products can provide social proof and validation for buyers. #watertok
