In tandem with many jurisdictions around the world, mandatory disclosure of climate-related financial risk is becoming a landmark for sustainability transparency across various industries in Canada, including banking. With the TCFD framework now fully incorporated in the International Sustainability Standards Board’s (ISSB) Standards, the banking sector could face challenges to adjust such as potential disruption to already-developed industry mandates and the need for continuous adaptation to evolving disclosure requirements. At last week’s #2024FinancialForum in Whistler, Innovation Federal Credit Union shared their latest ESG report, "Member Perspectives on ESG: An In-Depth Analysis." Conducted by Insightrix Research, the study surveyed over 1,800 participants, including both members and non-members, to examine perceptions of ESG policies at Innovation. The key findings highlight strong support for ESG initiatives and provide valuable insights into each of the three pillars: Environmental, Social, and Governance. There are many worldviews about the HARM and GOOD that can come from sustainability standards. HARM: >> Standards can impact entry and accessibility of equity deserving groups to markets >> Consultations with Indigenous and equity deserving groups is often unpaid labour, so the folks that can participate have privilege GOOD: >> Some standards drive more transparent and accountable playing fields >> In theory, standards improve quality and inspire confidence from consumers Indigenous voices are beginning to emerge more prominently in many standards setting spaces. I think it’s important to remember this is just the start and the voices of Indigenous and equity deserving groups in these standard setting spaces will increase the GOOD and reduce the HARM. So - while no standards making process is perfect, at least organizations like the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) are beginning to centre Indigenous and human rights. #progress not #perfection
