This past week, I had the privilege of being in Ottawa with my incredible marketing team for our QBR and 2025 planning lock-in. After months of remote work, being back in person was a reminder of the irreplaceable energy and connection that only happens when we're face-to-face. The spark of rapid ideation. The clarity of immediate communication. The sheer agility of being able to read the room, pivot on ideas, and align in real time. The authentic connections that deepen when you're sharing not just ideas, but meals, laughter, and the occasional late-night "aha!" moments. But let me be honest: it was also exhausting. Going from months of screen-time collaboration to being on all day, every day, for an entire week was a major shift. By the time I boarded my plane home, I found myself sobbing in a mix of mental exhaustion, emotional release, and maybe even some gratitude for the shared experience. This week reminded me of the magic of in-person work, but also the toll it can take. The emotional and physical shift of being so intensely present—after so much time apart—is something I’m still processing. I don’t know what the future of work looks like. The balance between remote and in-person remains a complex equation we’re all figuring out. But what I do know is that moments like this—both the highs and the lows—are what push us forward, as individuals and as teams. To my team: thank you for showing up with all your energy, ideas, and hearts this week. To anyone else navigating the new era of work: I see you.👀

Next year, Lightspeed Commerce will exit its teenage years and turn 20. What does that maturity mean? For me, it’s all about shifting from simply a growth mindset to one of profitability. I sat down with Gus Papageorgiou, our Head of Investor Relations and host of the Inside Lightspeed podcast, to discuss this cultural shift, where we’re heading, and how my role as CEO will guide this moving forward. When Lightspeed first started, we were all about seizing opportunities — whether it was moving to the cloud early on, expanding into new markets, or launching payments. "You have to have a website." That was the cry. Whether you were Joe's Pizza or a huge multi-national company. A gas station brand in Canada hired our ad agency to build them a website. This is before mobile. Before location. It was an online brochure about how awesome they were – because you have to have a website. It was the first marketing tactic that you had to have. If someone said to Joe's Pizza or Petro Canada that "you have to have outdoor" the people would say something about the marketing mix and maybe it was good, but you dpn't have to have outdoor. You have to have a website. This made it different. it wasn't a marketing tactic anymore. It was like a sign out front. A thing for marketing, but different. Like the sign out front, it was ignored once the website was made. If it was higher ed, it is refreshed every time a new president was hired. "We need a new sign," they essentially said to impose their imprint on the brand. Having a marketing tactic that you had to have meant it was easy to get the next ones. You have to be on Facebook. You have to be on Twitter. You have to be on YouTube. You have to be on TikTok. You have to be on BlueSky. We have social media managers – we don't have outdoor media managers. What is the point? Websites are marketing tactics. If the tactic is wrong, then so is the website. Joe's Pizza only needs a menu online with hours. That's it. Your institution of higher education doesn't need 100 Facebook Pages. It isn't helping. We need to simplify marketing. It is out of control.

A lot has changed in the last 15 years. It's no longer enough for brands to invest in their website alone—they need to meet their customers where they are to succeed. As an agency, Barrel has evolved from focusing solely on a client’s website to examining the entire customer journey, seeking opportunities to enhance how customers shop and experience the brand across touchpoints. Many of our clients are CPG brands, making this approach even more relevant. These days we're working on building Shopify B2B E-Commerce storefronts, designing Amazon content, creating personalized email/SMS flows, and implementing Shopify POS. Shopify has continually evolved with merchants' changing needs and customers' buying patterns. They’re not afraid to embrace partnerships like Amazon Buy with Prime while investing the same energy in POS and B2B that got their core e-commerce offering to where it is today. The Summer ’24 Edition is aptly titled ‘Unified’ and, as usual, it’s a lot to digest. The addition of a “Top 10” summary this year is a great starting point. Among my favorite updates are unified & tailored Markets experiences across B2B and retail, store credit availability, split shipping in checkout, and seamless store pickup between POS and DTC. Copy and paste my Content Pillar Prompt: You are a LinkedIn content creation and growth expert. I am [insert your personal brand statement and descriptions]. First, develop a list of content pillars and review them with me. Once I agree on the content pillars, develop a content planning calendar template for LinkedIn posts and articles over the next quarter. The template should include themes based on industry events, holidays, and trending topics in [Your Industry]. Also, suggest a posting frequency that balances visibility with audience engagement, considering the best times and days to post.
