My Montreal.rb September 2024 presentation "Ruby GUI Desktop Development Hands-On Tutorial" went very well today. We built a Desktop version of the Todo MVC sample in 10 steps, starting with application scaffolding, and then adding features in very thin slices by following an agile incremental approach to development. It is becoming more and more common for users to also contribute to the development of the software that they use--especially in the domains of computer graphics and gaming. Terms like 'modding' software have been around since at least the early 90s when the popular game Doom allowed for users to create their own content and modify the behavior of the program. Behind these programs there thus must be a mechanism for allowing users to 'hook' into the main program. In this talk, I will be showing several software developer kits including Autodesk Maya 3D (C++), Unity3D (C#), Unreal Engine (C++), and QT Modeler(C), and present a case study of how they are designed. At the end of the design discussion I will present how to get started building your own plugin system, and what considerations must be taken in mind (e.g. does the application or plugin manage resources, what should be exposed in the API, how do you embed a scripting language, and how should you distribute your plugins). Chris Klug, Developer at Active Solution, keeps seeing developers using Entity Framework, Microsoft's open-source object-relational mapper (ORM) for .NET applications, in less optimal ways. "And if one more person tells me 'We used a micro-ORM for this project, since it does the same thing as EF but without the complexity,' I will blow a gasket!" he said. Hey recruitiers / hiring managers... adding this kind of info to your posts sure would be swell for everyone involved since "engineering manager" and "software manager" mean such different things in different organizations. Even with descriptions and required skills this info clarifies what matters and how much. A job requires Java for example. If you say technical is 5 stars someone that isn't strong in code isn't (or shouldn't) apply. If you say technical is 1 star, someone that wants to stay in code while managing isn't going to apply. And importantly for both visa versa. More context can only help you be more likely to get candidates that match your expectations. Take a look at the 5 different types of Engineering Manager and then specify it and mention the blog (no clue who the blog poster is btw, no affiliation) or use the idea of the different areas to stress. eg: The Delivery Engineering Manager Technical 🌟 Team 🌟🌟 Process 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Product 🌟 https://lnkd.in/eSj2i9yj
