Exploring the impacts of AI and GenAI across industries

What is the expected Return on Investment (ROI) on all this AI spend? Could it actually lead to their demise, or at least stagnant share performance? The last major industry wide Capital Expenditure (Capex) spending cycle was the telecoms (Verizon, AT&T, etc.) and energy producers (Exxon, Chevron, etc.) 10-20 years ago…how were those investments over the subsequent decade? Not great…as shown in the attached graph. A few Friday’s ago, I showed you the massive amount of AI Infrastructure spending of three hyperscalers – META, GOOG, MSFT – reaching about $50bn pre quarter. Many industry analysts are expecting a trillion dollars of Capex spend over the next few years on data centers and AI capability. So, you have this massive spend and everyone is saying that the potential opportunity is so huge, but because it’s so expensive you need trillions of dollars of payoff to make the ROI attractive. Maybe it will be, I don’t know. But, on the other hand, none of these companies can afford not to invest because all of their competitors are and it’s (at least theoretically) the way of the future. Just like with the telecoms, if you don’t invest, you’ll get left behind. This could lead to overinvestment. Ben Thompson from Stratechery has a great quote on that point: “I think [overinvestment] is bullish for AI because we need inference to be cheap. A great way to get cheap inference is for everyone to lose tons of money buying tons of GPUs. So I think this is great broadly speaking, but it could be a lot of value destruction.”

For our last (of 4) strategy pieces on advanced RRSP planning, we look at the “meltdown strategy”. This strategy aims to replace excess RRSP assets with non-registered assets, but is the riskier that the others we have discussed because it uses an investment loan (leverage). The meltdown strategy follows the same principal as the preceding posts – it can be more tax efficient over the long-term to spread out RRSP/RRIF withdrawals over more years. This, of course, depends on both your and your spouse’s retirement date. We talked 2-weeks ago about how a spousal RRSP being key if you think your spouse will retire before you…but I digress. For the meltdown strategy, you would obtain an investment loan to be invested in a non-registered account. You would then pay the interest component of the loan by withdrawing (deregistering) the exact same amount of funds from your RRSP. From a tax perspective, you are accomplishing an offsetting income inclusion (RRSP withdrawal) with an interest expense deduction from the loan – because the cash from the loan is invested in a non-registered taxable account, you can write off the interest. Said another way, you’ve created an offsetting income-expense balance, at least in theory (there are withholding taxes on RRSP withdrawals so sizing is key), which is why you should consult your tax professional before implementing anything like this. It is quite simple to create a tax-efficient non-registered account strategy targeting capital gains. Even heavily discounted bonds will accomplish this quite nicely. This is a complex strategy so you’ll need someone reliable to model this out for you, but it has the potential to help you restructure your savings if you find yourself very RRSP heavy.

In addition, we have executed a Non-Disclosure Agreement with an AI motor manufacturing company and have started preliminary due diligence so a proper letter of intent can be executed. We are also looking to potentially acquire additional companies in the future. As a side note we would like to assure all the shareholders that PDI will not rush into any agreements for the sake of acquiring a business. We will perform a thorough due diligence process to ensure the acquisition makes financial sense before an agreement is reached. The goal with the acquisition of these motor companies is to expand CM Tech’s market exposure into new markets that we currently do not service. With the acquisition or merger of this larger company, we will add the critical staff that will be required to support exponential growth as well as eliminate redundant staffing further enhancing the profitability of the combined companies, as well as greatly increasing shareholders value. With the ongoing emergence and growth of artificial intelligence (AI) we are anticipating and preparing for an increase in demand for CM Tech’s custom designed motors. Currently, CM Tech does not directly supply the AI market but supplies the motors to the semiconductor equipment manufacturers who produce and service the automated equipment that is responsible for making the silicon wafers used in the micro processing chips. These microchips are used in AI as well as in smart TVs, cell phones, computers, and virtually every smart device produced today. The AI chip market is expected to exceed $70 Billion by the end of 2024 and grow to $90 Billion in 2025
