Great post from Ekta Meena Bibra. On the subject of consumer perception, it's also worth noting that there has a real rise in misinformation about EVs, too. Chances are you've heard or read something about: - on a lifecycle GHG basis EVs aren't any better than gas cars... - unless your power grid is 100% clean then driving an EV doesn't help... - there are insufficient metals/minerals for EV batteries... - mining for metals/minerals makes EVs no better—or even worse—for the environment than gas cars... - EVs will collapse the power grid... - EVs dont' work in the cold; the batteries quickly degrade; they all catch on fire, etc. etc. etc... There are loads of myths circulating out there and it's hard to fathom they aren't having an impact on consumer perceptions. The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association applauds measures in the 2024 federal budget aimed at supporting the transformation to electrification in the automotive industry. However, we remain concerned that the government lacks a clear plan to achieve its mandated electric vehicle (EV) sales targets. Auto manufacturers have announced over $30 billion in job-creating EV battery manufacturing and vehicle assembly investment in Canada since 2020. How Standards Positively Impact Canadians: Standards developed by Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) influence every aspect of our lives. In our homes for example, lighting, heating and AC, plumbing, and appliances adhere to rigid industry codes and standards. Our vehicle’s braking, propulsion, and safety systems must meet product and national safety standards. At work, standards enhance productivity, quality, and risk management, fostering professional conduct and reducing turnover. For decades, the contribution of engineers, academics, experts from different fields, manufacturers, policymakers, and standard developers have enhanced our safety and comfort that we have become accustomed too. We do not consider the importance of standards in our everyday lives, and it is easy to take them for granted, especially without realizing standards ensure safety, quality, reliability, cost, functionality, and environment in every aspect of our lives. They are often invisible to most people because we do not teach standards in our school system. Here are a few examples of standards that may impact your lives. As a concrete example, in Canada, all electrical toys must comply with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard C22.2 No. 149-1972 – Electrically Operated Toys, ensuring safety of children. Toys are not only just fun, but they are also essential tools for a child's growth and development. Knowing that the toys your child plays with have been tested against rigorous standards alleviates the worries of most parents today. Standards support people with disabilities through accessibility, safety and inclusivity to products and services. As Canada transitions into an aging society, standards will be crucial to encourage an “active aging” society, providing equal opportunities for health, participation, and security to enhance quality of life as people age. CSA and ISO have already begun their research and roadmap to plan necessary standards to address many of the gaps today to pave the way for a better future. Technology is part of everyone’s lives today and from your desktops to mobile devices and apps, we are surrounded by a bevy of technology today in this Fourth Industrial Revolution. Technology standards, set limits on technologies and consider whether it’s "acceptable or fit for use” for consumers, ensuring quality and safety. From the Internet of Things (IoT) to smart grids, emerging technologies have really become a set of tools that people use in their daily lives with the help of dedicated standards. In summary, standards and codes are critical to our daily lives, as well as being essential to Canada’s technology infrastructure, health and safety of Canadians, and the nation’s economic performance. A recent road trip underlined the challenges with Canada's public EV charging network. Poor reliability and a lack of convenient, accessible fast chargers guarantees that the government’s mandated EV sales targets (100% EV sales by 2035) are unachievable. Over the course of a 660km drive 3 of 5 chargers were not working. Not a single charger delivered close to the advertised charging speeds. This is unacceptable given the government's ambitious mandated sales targets. Fortunately there is a solution. The federal government can regulate charging companies to ensure government-funded infrastructure meets strict reliability and performance standards. Equally important is the need for a plan to build the infrastructure required to support mass EV adoption. According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), 40,000 public ports need to be installed each year between 2025 and 2040 (there are currently only 29,502). Recognizing the importance and impact of accessible public #EV charging networks across Canada, Pollution Probe has made a clear recommendation to the Government of Canada as part of the Green Budget Coalition. The recommended investment: $325 million over three years into NRCan's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) This funding is critical to work with the private sector and other partners in building a comprehensive and reliable EV public charging network across the country. Pollution Probe strongly urges that this recommended investment be included in the 2025 Federal Budget, or even sooner in the 2024 Fall Economic Statement. Today the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, Canadian Automobile Dealers Association - CADA, and the Global Automakers of Canada launched the Countdown to 2035. The Countdown illustrates how little time we have to prepare for an all-electric vehicle fleet. If there is any hope of meeting the mandated zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales targets established by the federal government, urgent action is required now to put Canada on the path to widespread ZEV adoption. This depends on an unprecedented national effort to build charging infrastructure, expand the electricity grid, increase clean electricity production and help more Canadians switch to electric is urgently required. Automakers have announced over $40 billion in job-creating investment in Canada to build a ZEV supply chain. I was delighted to attend today's announcement by Honda of the first comprehensive EV supply chain in Canada with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Doug Ford. In the same week that Stats Canada data showed that Canada’s productivity dropped to 7% below its long-term trend we have this landmark announcement that Honda will invest $15-billion here in Ontario. This is not only the largest investment in Canada’s automotive industry, but it is also Honda’s largest ever investment. With brand new production and the supply chain around it, this is exactly what’s needed to attack our productivity gap. With this announcement Ontario has now secured its third battery plant and five EV platforms, along with a growing list of battery components manufacturers. In this article, Gabe Friedman articulates very well the main challenge of EV ownership: INTERCITY travel SUCKS in Canada if you drive anything but a Tesla. It's because too many fast chargers from everyone else cannot be trusted to be working when you need them. And it's a sad, sad, sad, situation when even the network owned and operated by Hydro One and Ontario Power Generation, Ivy, can't be trusted, and theirs are on the biggest highways in Canada! Personally, I can't wait until next year when we can charge our family Nissan Motor Corporation and Kia Canada EV's at Tesla Superchargers. Let me finish on a positive note... Drivers in just about every multi-car household with a place to charge overnight, would have more fun driving (even basic EV's handle like sports cars and are as smooth as limousines) and save big $$$ in "fuel" and maintenance, if at least one of them was a plug-in! Some carmakers keep repeating that Canada won't reach its ZEV sales target. “We need to make sure that we’re revisiting targets to align targets with reality,” Frank Voss, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, said in an interview with Bloomberg. Talking about reality, here is one reality: good EVs and PHEVs sell well. Bad EVs and PHEVs... not so much. While the Toyota RAV4 Prime is a good PHEV and there is a 12 to 18 month waiting list, the Toyota bZ4x AWD is not a very good EV... and doesn't sell well. So, it's not just about the government. It's also about carmakers being able to offer good products to consumers.
