Leveraging Social Experiments to increase student engagement
Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE)
What if I told you that you can get your students engaged in your content week after week with consistent high intensity by just adjusting a couple of your learning activity modalities into social experiments? What if I tell you that you can do this in your face-to-face, online AND hybrid classes? Dr. Robin Yap researched 1320 college and post-graduate students at George Brown College, Canada in two years. The test group were taught using social experiments instead of lecture-class activities, flipped classroom, or simulation-and-test format. The findings were remarkable. It was found that class after class, a high level of engagement not only occurred during the semester but more importantly, knowledge retention was over 60% six months post-intervention! This is no ordinary accomplishment for the constantly changing multi-cultural and multi-generational college and post-graduate classroom landscape. This session will discuss how faculty can leverage social experiments in their classes in any delivery modality: face-to-face, online, or hybrid.

How are you measuring the value of your online communities and networks of practice? This research-in-progress paper will showcase an enhancement of the Wenger, et. al. (2011) model for promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks and the Phillips measurement model linking the value of communities using online social network technologies for performance improvement with business objectives. In our rapidly changing workplace landscape, augmenting formal performance improvement activities are informal learning and coaching incorporating social network technologies to increase involvement, strengthen relationships, and enhance employee development. Two concurrent case studies in Canada and in the Netherlands are currently being
conducted to identify the viability of this measurement model in a corporate workplace.Other authorsSee publication -

Critical HRD Need For Emergence Of Critters In Adult Education
Kansas State University Libraries New Prairie Press
Critters seek to expose, understand, and change the underlying causes of a phenomenon—the business of adult education. Adult education is foundational to the engagement of critical management studies (CMS). Critical HRD appears to be a bridge between CMS frameworks and Adult Education theories. Critters will ensure the complexities and breadth of influences get threaded for all stakeholders.
