  • People-friendly Cities Workshop

Worked to develop and lead a workshop, designed to encourage participants (planners and policy makers) to consider diverse and underrepresented populations in the planning process. The workshop was developed for the 2015 Urban Ecologies conference. Results will be shared as a research snippet of the Generationed City project.

  • Alder Village Subdivision Plan

    -

As the term project for PLAN 646, we were tasked with developing a subdivision plan for a 100-acre plot southwest of the city of Kitchener in the community of New Dundee.

As the term project for PLAN 646, we were tasked with developing a subdivision plan for a 100-acre plot southwest of the city of Kitchener in the community of New Dundee.

The proposed development was titled Alder Village, a design that cultivated a multi-generational, healthy and active community and a space that is appealing in all seasons. Resident and developer value were maximized through the use of an open space design over conventional subdivision design. This was chosen because of its ability to enhance financial returns and build an environment that residents would proud to call home.

The design introduces 557 units to the 100-acre site while retaining a natural and rural quality. The plan includes 15,000ft² of commercial space to house services missing from nearby New Dundee (daycare, clinic, pharmacy). The plan also includes live-work flats to reduce the need for commuting for those who are able to set up a home office. The planting plan emphasizes seasonal blooms and the use of colour, even throughout the winter. An AODA and environmental/fitness trail system allow for residents and their entire families to exploit the enhanced natural environment. Architectural cues are taken from nearby rural communities developed before the automobile. The built form prioritizes the pedestrian and emphasizes the human scale.

  • Northfield Station Area Plan, PLAN 703

    -

As a part of the final project for PLAN 703, students were required to create station area plans for areas surrounding proposed LRT stations in K-W. We were concerned with the built form of areas within a ten minute walk (800m) of LRT stations.

The plan for the Northfield Station Area aimed to expand and enhance the existing office uses in the area. The plan also aimed to improve connections with the neighbourhood and improvements to the pedestrian realm.

  • Mapping the Dimensions of Suburbanisms

    -

A series of maps created covering 23 Canadian cities as part of a project attempting to understand the changing character of Canadian cities. This project aimed to move beyond the understanding of suburbs as places towards suburbanisms as ways of living. Three dimensions of suburbanism were considered. This project was completed under the direction of Markus Moos building from previous work completed by Anna Kramer.

  • MAID (Map Analysis Inset Detection)

    -

To support Census 2006 operations an automated mapping system was created by Statistics Canada based on the Elections Canada EMRP system. The modified mapping system was named the “Census Mapping System (CMS)”. To support the 2011 Census, functionality was expanded to include the automated map inset creation function MAID. The resulting system was named the General Mapping System (GMS).

While under development, the MAID module generated many unnecessary insets. Serving as a member on the Census Collection and Processing Support Task I assisted in parameter testing to limit the number of unnecessary insets created.
