🔍 May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month! 🌟 As we recognize Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, it's crucial to emphasize the pressing need for improved collaboration between Canadian provinces and our Federal government to effectively allocate funds ($1.5B) from Canada's Rare Disease Strategy. These funds can be instrumental in advancing diagnosis and treatment for persons living with cystic fibrosis and other rare diseases across the country. As a caregiver, taxpayer and voter - it truly upsets me that our officials are not doing more to collaboratively work on solutions in this area. With an estimated 4,300 Canadians living with cystic fibrosis, it's imperative that we prioritize efforts to enhance research, and improve access to specialized care. By working together to implement the government's Rare Disease Strategy, we can make significant strides in providing better outcomes and quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis. Stumbled across this article this morning in the Toronto Star that raises concerns about clinical trials, especially regarding participant incentives and potential ethical issues. While it's essential to acknowledge and address any shortcomings in the industry, it's also important to not overlook the immense value that clinical trials provide to patients and public health. Clinical trials are at the heart of nearly every medical breakthrough. They enable researchers to discover new treatments that save lives and improve the quality of life for millions. For many patients, especially those with life-threatening conditions, participating in a clinical trial is primarily about hope. Hope for a new therapy when traditional treatments haven’t worked and contributing to advancements that might one day save others. Of course, there are challenges. The article mentions cases where participants may feel pressured to lie due to financial incentives, and this is a real concern that should be addressed through better oversight and ethical standards. But focusing only on these stories creates a skewed view of an industry that works tirelessly to improve patient care. In reality, clinical trials are highly regulated, and most are conducted with integrity and care for the participants. We are all constantly innovating to make trials safer, more accessible, and more transparent. The time-limited reimbursement strategy allows the integration of future clinical trial evidence to help shape stronger health policy and drug funding decisions where longer-term follow-up data is required." On my travels this week I was reminded of the importance of communication on customer experience. I had a small delay on my flight in each direction but the impact on me was very different. It went like this... 1). Boarding complete in Toronto, door closed, engines started, but we don't move. After just one minute captain makes an announcement "hey folks, we're all ready to go but there's some aircraft traffic behind us and so it will be 5-10 minutes, sit back, relax and we'll be on our way as soon as we can". I did relax (as much as a nervous flyer can) and sure enough we left after about 10 minutes. 2). Boarding complete in New York, door closed, engines started, and again we don't move. The difference, no announcement. 5 minutes passed, then 10. During this time I'm scanning outside to see if there's bad weather, mechanics working on the plane, escaped animals, anything. The total delay was comparably short. In the absence of communication, it felt much longer and my nervous-flyer-energy increased throughout. This got me to thinking about the customers we serve and how a short communication can change how they experience a challenging situation tremendously. So, if you're working on a customer issue this week, send them an update! To help with my nervousness when flying, I try to appreciate and photograph the views out the window.
