Calling All SALES People – YOU HURT YOURSELF WHEN YOU DO THIS!! A huge piece of advice to all of you included in SALES process for your business including CEO’s, MD’S, SALES Directors, Client Directors, Head of Sales, EVP’s, VP’s, SVP’S…I think you get the drift. If your business is taking part in an official RFP process and the RFP states the lines of communication to be used (which it will) i.e. people you should contact (probably a #Procurement person or maybe a Stakeholder)…then abide by it! Now sometimes during the RFP process you may learn of other more senior people who may have an impact on the RFP outcome. This may be via demos or chemistry sessions, or your senior people already know and have a relationship with senior people in the business… BUT please, no matter how desperate or brilliant you think you are…. DO NOT CONTACT THOSE SENIOR PEOPLE DIRECTLY (unless requested to by the contact in the RFP!) It may in your mind seem like a smart thing to do, as you can influence the outcome and get advantage…and I get that is the SALES person in you, and you’ve seen it pay off sometimes… But here’s what actually happens: If the Procurement team are valued and are in charge of doing the official RFP - then take it as given!! All that will happen by your actions is that the senior person will reach out to the Procurement team and tell them…. and guess what that does to your proposal…? Don’t think for one second, your proposal goes to the top of the pile. IMHO, IT’S A HUGE BLACK MARK! What your actions have actually managed to achieve are: 1.     You will have annoyed the Procurement person managing the RFP 2.     You will have annoyed the CPO or Head of Procurement 3.     You will have annoyed the Senior stakeholder who is sponsoring the RFP 4.     You will probably annoy the Senior person you contacted… after all there’s a Procurement function to deal with this stuff! So, SALESPEOPLE…no matter the temptation, do yourself a favour and abide by the RFP rules of communication. You have been warned! _________________________ 😃 Hi I'm Steve Walton. The Sprinter Award 🥇 I was honoured with the “Quickest Win” award for closing a substantial business with a client after just one call. Given that deals in my industry usually take between 3 to 6 months to finalize, this recognition means a lot. 🥹 While I am certainly grateful and pleased to receive this recognition, I’m not here to dwell on how I felt about the award. So, what am I going to discuss today? 🤷‍♀️ I have learnt that in sales, no two situations are the same. Here’s why: 💥It’s not always about luck, nor is it solely about hard work. 💥Each client's needs are unique and should be approached from different perspectives. 💥Clients have varying preferences: some enjoy small talk, while others prefer to keep conversations brief and to the point. 💥Some clients have clear, defined requirements, while others need to be guided and educated throughout their sales journey (consultative sales). 💥For some clients, budget is not an issue, whereas for others, it can be a significant constraint. 💥Few clients may struggle to say no, while others are very vocal about their preferences and dislikes. 💥Some clients are willing to take risks with new partners, while others prefer to stick with established relationships. Add to the mix the variabilities of the human factor, situation/ requirement of client firms, prevailing economic conditions etc., and we have a multifaceted challenge. ⛰️ To truly excel in sales, one need to master: ✅Psychology ✅Active listening ✅Human behaviour ✅Emotional intelligence ✅Pattern recognition ✅Persuasion ✅Empathy ✅Closing techniques Because success in sales requires more than just promoting a product or service; it demands ongoing learning and skill development to enhance effectiveness. 🫡 💫 While at the same time have the sensitivity to gauge situations and the mental fortitude to deal with all the uncertainties, and to be patient. 🙏 💫The patience is needed to wait for the right pitch, and when the right pitch arrives, to swing for the fences. 🏌️‍♀️ Receiving the “Quickest Win” award underscores the importance of deep understanding and adaptability in the sales profession. Salespeople, we all know that how you say something can be just as important as what you say…but it’s hard to get it right! How do I know the right tone / inflection / energy to use at certain points in each conversation? Think of your favorite song… It takes you on a very strategic journey using dynamics. It moves up and down at just the right points to engage you in a very specific way. So how is that relevant to sales? Let's say your Dynamics Scale is 1-10. 1 being soft and somber as if you are leaning in and listening. 5 is engaging in a natural, base line tone. Then 10 is a powerful presentation of a possible future (or the climax of your favorite song). Example Dynamics Conversation: When you first open a conversation you may be at a 5. Then if you get initial resistance you may drop to a 2 or even 1 to acknowledge, and then start to raise your tone as you help them move past that resistance. As you move into discovery, you would be at a 4 as you ask open ended questions then naturally drop your tone to a 1 or 2 as you listen, and even back up to a 4 as you relate and engage. When it's time for you to share value, you may move to 6 or 7 where you’re storytelling and up to 8 as you cast a vision of what could be. You may even go to a 9 before dropping it instantly (like your favorite song does) to close with a specific call to action back at a 4 or 5. It’s fun to play around with your tone and be very intentional with it. It’s an incredibly value tool that when developed can make you even more influential as a communicator. Both in sales and life.
