Sustainability reporting in Canada is changing to provide increased transparency and to align with global standards. The Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) has proposed new standards for the coming years. These new standards will align with the global baseline set by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). These new requirements will enhance the clarity and comparability of sustainability disclosures from companies. Requirements for additional data will come into effect over the coming years, eventually requiring data ranging as far as Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2027. What are the key elements of planning and designing low-carbon, climate-resilient health care facilities (HCF), and how do they balance climate adaptation and mitigation strategies? In a series of CSA Group workshops, experts from across Canada formulated several ideas, including: - incorporating concepts of a low-carbon, climate-resilient HCF as early as possible in the planning and design process - adopting forward-looking climate models aligned with the lifecycle of equipment and systems to improve #ClimateResiliency - considering passive heating and cooling, heat recovery systems, ground source heat exchangers, and other strategies to reduce water and energy consumption in HCFs. The ideas shared during the workshops will help incorporate the principles of low-carbon, climate-resilient HCF design into the next edition of the standard CSA Z8000 for health care facilities design.

This is an extremely important step in the governance of Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) to strengthen its credibility and integrity. Establishing a transparent and effective governance system will be a key component in the implementation of a trusted standard for GHG measurement, reporting and monitoring - to get to real emissions reductions. I am excited to be part of this important path in the GHG Protocol journey.

Recap: Canada’s Emissions Performance Standards Webinar – Key Takeaways for Facilities Altech Environmental Consulting recently attended the MECP's Emissions Performance Standards (EPS) webinar, which provided critical updates on the EPS Online system and compliance processes. Key points include: • Facilities above the Total Annual Emissions Limit (TAEL) must purchase compliance units and submit the Request for Excess Emissions Units (EEUs) form by December 1st. • Facilities below the limit may sell Emissions Performance Units (EPUs) through the EPS Online system. "Canada is among the most prominent supporters of EPR in the world. In 2009, the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment (CCME) introduced the country's EPR action plan to facilitate the creation of EPR programs across its provinces, aiming to reduce landfill waste and promote circularity. By 2013, over 80 early EPR programs had been implemented at the provincial level, and this number continues to grow as more programs reach their final stages. Numerous non-profits have partnered with provincial governments to help producers transition to an EPR framework, assisting with recycling program design, materials listing, and supply chain management. Notable organizations include Circular Materials, which supports various EPR programs across Canada, including Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) in Québec and Recycle BC in British Columbia." The CSSB (related to the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)) is developing Canada's region-specific sustainability reporting/disclosure standards that regulators will likely point to when they require specific industries to report their climate impact. This is likely one of your only opportunities to provide feedback in the timelines necessary to meet our climate targets! ➡ Why should private, small and mid-sized businesses care? Canada's corporate sustainability disclosure standards will likely impact their supply chains, too - so if you sell to (or want to sell to) corporate customers you may be required to disclose elements of these standards as part of your supplier agreements. It's important that the CSSB takes everyone's perspective into account so private, small and mid-sized businesses are held accountable as well, but aren't bombarded with additional reporting costs (and therefore left out of the transition economy) when regulations come into effect.
