Last week, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) shared two important announcements. ClearBlue Markets published Live Updates for subscribers of our Vantage carbon intelligence platform, that included detailed reviews and analysis. In summary: 🍁 ECCC published information about approved carbon intensities (CI) under the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR). The information for each CI pathway includes the CI applicant, feedstock type, facility location, fuel type, and the version of the Fuel LCA model used for the assessment. ECCC also published information on approved CI scores under the Canada CFR. In total, 119 final CIs have been approved. 🍁 ECCC also announced the proposed Oil and Gas Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions Cap Regulations (proposed Regulations). Local Burnaby-based carbon capture startup, Svante, just closed $100 million in funding from the Canada Growth Fund (CGF). Here’s why this matters: 💰 $100M Investment: This funding is part of CGF's $15 billion mission to speed up the rollout of clean technologies. Svante will get $50 million right away, with another $50 million available to help build their carbon capture projects in Canada and the US. This makes it one of only 3 cleantech companies in the last year in Canada to have raised more than $50M, the other 3 being: - dcbel solar tech ($50M Series B), - Eavor Technologies Inc. geothermal ($182M Series B), and - FLO EV Charging ($136M Series E) --- 🏗️ Scaling Production: Svante is building a 141,000 sq. ft. facility in Burnaby, BC. This site will produce filters that can capture 10 million tonnes of CO2 each year. It will also be Svante’s global headquarters and R&D center, making them a big player in cutting global emissions. A common challenge I encounter in closure/post mining land use is the lack of connection to an non-production business model. ESG as compliance is a cost line item that fights for attention, and the more you spend the more production is required to offset, and the further down the track it is the less you want to spend today. Post mining business models that improve triple bottom line profitability, either through revenue or cost or risks, are the underpinning need to drive strategy, plans and action today. And that's just at the existing site/asset level. At the corporate level, there's alternate business models that change the fundamental paradigm, but that kind of change requires real change in the ecosystem (i.e. finance/capital markets) as well as to the risk profile and ways of working of the business. I don't think I've really seen a "miner" who has scaled an alternate model yet, though perhaps they are out there and I just don't know? #mining #esg #energytransition
