Decarbonizing and vastly growing Canada's electricity supplies requires strategic policy shifts and rapid execution. What role can the federal government play to support this generational challenge and opportunity? Published today, the final report of the Canada Electricity Advisory Council provides advice to the federal government on how it can enable the electricity sector to play its pivotal role in our clean energy transition. Chaired by Philippe Dunsky, the independent, 19-member Council achieved full-consensus on 28 recommendations that aim to align on goals, enable the build, support the transition, and save energy to lighten the load. In a historic shift, Alberta's last coal-fired power plant has ceased operations, heralding a new era of cleaner energy for the province. The result of heat pumps working in cold weather really surprised me as it has not been observed in existing heat pumps. Typically, when temperatures get below -18 heat pumps are no more efficient than resistance heating. As temperatures can get much colder in parts of Canada relative to Western Europe, backup sources will play a greater role.
