This initiative has made a significant impact on both the well-being and performance of athletes. Key Program Highlights: Equitable Access: All athletes have access to essential mental health resources, fully aligned with NCAA guidelines. 📢 Advocacy & Awareness: We’re breaking down the stigma, opening doors for critical mental health conversations in athletics. Notable Outcomes: 📈 High Engagement: Participation rates between 44% and 82% underscore the need and desire for mental health resources among athletes. 🏥 Immediate Support: Prompt interventions provided to 3.4% of athletes, immediate intervention to support their mental health needs. 🤝 Trust & Positive Impact: 100% of participating athletes felt our platform affirmed Concordia's commitment to their well-being, with encouraging feedback from coaches on improved teamwork and communication. Hockey has changed since I was a kid. Practice consisted of learning the basics like skating and puck control, generally in a very static environment. Usually skating around cones and shooting on an empty net. Somewhere along the way, USA Hockey Hockey and other leaders in the hockey world learned that people need to learn these skills in a much more dynamic environment so that when they are faced with real situations in a game, they are actually prepared for them. Enter the small area game. Coaching these 8-year-olds on the ice has been an eye-opening experience in teaching skills that go way beyond any classroom. Watching them play in small-area games has taught me something powerful: these games force players to think, react, and adapt quickly in real situations, developing skills they can’t learn through theory alone. They’re learning through experience, and that’s what makes these lessons stick. This same principle applies to real-world training in any field. The value of microlearning, like what BuildWitt Training offers, is in that immediate application—learning something and putting it to use instantly. It’s a concept I’ve been impressed to see in action at the Ariat Dirt World Summit, where leaders in the construction industry, like BuildWitts Chief Product Officer, Randy Blount, are championing this approach. Randy, a fellow coach himself, leverages his experiences coaching youth football to understand what makes learning effective. Under his guidance, BuildWitt Training has developed a platform that’s all about practical, on-the-job skills—skills you don’t just hear and forget, but actually put to work. It’s the same thing we’re doing with these kids on the ice: showing them how to play the game rather than just talking about it. This is such a helpful article for moving us past the myths that winning more medals inspires the next generation. It's a lovely idea, but the evidence just isn't there. Once we can move beyond that, I think there are two interesting paths to explore: - firstly, could we set up elite sport differently within our society, how and where it's organised, how it's reported on in the media and how we engage with it, that would mean there would be a closer connection to the population? - secondly, and perhaps more importantly (as the first could tempt us simply to indulge further in focusing and investing mainly in medals...), if we know elite sport doesn't have a meaningful impact on increasing participation and inspiring others to get involved in sport, what might we then want and need to do differently across sport and society? Multitasking is playing air guitar, while break dancing, and stopping a 100 mph puck. Canada's national pastime is facing a slap shot it wasn't prepared for: a steady decline in youth participation. This unexpected trend has hockey fans north of the border worried about the sport's future. The national sport and beloved pastime of Canada is getting cross-checked by a number of things, and it's gotten to the point that fewer Canadian kids are playing hockey, while the number rises in the U.S. And hockey die-hards are raising alarms that the trend threatens the future of youth hockey, traditionally a breeding ground for the sport's popularity. It's a hat trick of the worst kind. The reasons for hockey's decline there run beyond the length of the rink, but they can be summed up in three areas: rising costs, variety of other sports, and lack of accessibility. The rising cost of hockey, from equipment and ice rentals to specialized coaching and travel leagues, is a major burden for many families. That can range into thousands of Canadian dollars a month. That along with the growing popularity of other sports is then driving families towards more affordable sports like soccer and basketball. In fact, soccer is the top choice, followed by swimming, hockey and basketball. Then, there's the accessibility and subsequently, time commitment factor to consider. Limited ice rink availability often forces practices and games into inconvenient slots, like early mornings or late nights. Combine that with many youth programs that operate year-round, requiring on- and off-ice sessions several times a week, and well, shooting hoops is looking pretty good. Icing or offsides? Canadian hockey faces a daunting challenge: rising costs are driving players away. Limited ice availability forces practices and games into inconvenient hours, further adding to the time commitment. To address these issues, Canada is exploring building new rinks and upgrading existing ones.
