Now, cue the flood of brokers posting about their "available capacity." 🙄 Let's cut the BS: They've got trucks - for the right price. And in a feeding frenzy? Loyalty's as rare as toilet paper was in 2020. Remember COVID? Yeah, this feels familiar. So What's the Solution? I don't have a magic wand, but I've got some ideas: → Bond those loads and leverage cross-border capacity through the US. → Bring your freight from Canada to the US, then tap into domestic US capacity (bonding required). → Consider bonding rail cans and running to Chicago. Maybe US rail capacity is an option for westbound freight? → If possible, hold off on sending freight. (I know, easier said than done.) → YOUR TURN: What strategies can we employ to improve capacity without skyrocketing rates? Drop your ideas below! It takes a special type of driver to handle LTL deck work. Let me take you through Jim’s week: Ran all weekend from Ontario after doing an offload and three picks in GTA on Friday. Reset Monday in Winnipeg, offload the back two tractors in SE Saskatchewan Tuesday morning, run to SW Saskatchewan to load a wheel loader for Edmonton. Offload, load some more freight for Northern BC where he will offload it and pickup an excavator for Vancouver Island. On the way to the island he will drop the John Deere tractor in Williams Lake. The goal is to get a good load off the island Friday morning, but if that doesn’t pan out then he’s headed for Tacoma to load for Alberta. This is why we’re so selective with drivers. We need the right temperament, organization, efficiency, and planning to make it all a success. One inefficient day could mean sitting all weekend. It’s not for everyone, and that’s ok.
