I'm thrilled to share that PULP SHRED's story is featured in INNOVATE Alberta! The article perfectly captures our mission: secure document shredding that's kind to the planet. At Pulp Shred, we're changing how document destruction is done. We don't want shredding to hurt the environment, so we found a way to do both security and sustainability right. We built a business model that follows the #TripleBottomLine - making sure our work is good for our company, society, and the environment. We're rewriting the story of security shredding. It doesn't have to mean filling landfills anymore! Pulp Shred saves over 1,700 trees a year and cuts down on CO2 emissions, and the INNOVATE Alberta article did a great job highlighting that impact. This recognition shows how important it is to handle data securely while caring for the environment. We want to prove that every business decision can be a step towards a greener future. Last week I attended a few talks at the PM Springfest conference and expo in Toronto. Here are a few of the takeaways on decarbonizing buildings: ✅Buildings account for about 13% of Canada's GHG emissions ✅Energy efficiency measures were recommended to quickly reduce emissions and save money. The saved money could then be invested in more expensive capital-intensive emission reduction initiatives. ✅It was recommended that business cases include carbon taxes and incentives; ROIs of less than 12 years should be considered (instead of only 5 years). ✅Building owners not reducing their building emissions will lose market share as many tenants have set net zero targets. ✅Physical climate risks of buildings should be evaluated given the increasing frequency of extreme weather and associated damage costs. ✅One advantage of a building with more insulation is that it increases the building's resiliency (e.g. ability to hold its temperature) in the event of a power outage. The graphic below presented by RDH provides a nice summary of the types of retrofits and expected range of GHG emission reductions.   Recently, I re-read parts of a 1985 history book, entitled “Recollections: Water Pollution Control in Ontario”, which was authored by ES&E Magazine Co-founder Tom Davey. Chapter nine covers in detail the evolution of water and wastewater associations. The first one in North America was the American Water Works Association (AWWA). It was founded in 1881 to allow an exchange of information about the management of water-works.   The first Canadian Section of the AWWA was established in 1920 in Montreal. In 1971, the Canadian Section reorganized and three new AWWA Sections were formed: Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Western Canada. Waterworks professionals in Quebec had received Section status in 1967. In 1973, the British Columbia Section was inaugurated, which meant there were now five Canadian AWWA Sections.   The Ontario Section of the AWWA restructured in 1995 and officially changed its name to the Ontario Water Works Association – A Section of AWWA.   In 1928, recognizing that there was a need for a wastewater association, some far-sighted individuals founded the Federation of Sewage Works Associations (FSWA). Initially, no annual conventions were held, but the Federation did launch the Sewage Works Journal. Equipment manufacturers promised to advertise in this new journal and other support came from the patent revenues of Dr. Karl Imhoff, the German inventor of Imhoff tanks.   The FSWA became the Water Pollution Control Federation (WPCF) in 1960, which in turn was renamed the Water Environment Federation in 1991 to reflect an expanded focus on non-point and point sources of pollution   In 1932, the legendary Dr. Albert Edward Berry called a meeting which resulted in the formation of the Canadian Institute of Sewage and Sanitation (CISS) in 1933. Dr. Berry later became president of the AWWA and WPCF. In 1962, CISS changed its name to the Canadian Institute of Pollution Control (CIPC), in order to become a vital component in pollution abatement, technology and research.   In 1962, the Association Québécoise des Techniques de l’Eau (now Réseau Environnement) became the first provincial association formed to serve both the water and wastewater sectors.   In 1969, the CIPC briefly formed an Ontario branch, but it dissolved shortly afterwards. Its assets were distributed on a per capita basic across Canada. The Pollution Control Association of Ontario (PCAO) was born from the Ontario Branch of the CIPC in 1971. It is a direct linear descendant of the Canadian Institute on Pollution Control. The PCAO became the Water Environment Association of Ontario in 1993.   Having attended OWWA and WEAO annual conferences separately for over 40 years, I enjoyed this year’s joint OWWA/WEAO event held last week in Niagara Falls. From what I heard, both the clean water and the dirty water crowd felt the same way!

Canadian winters typically mean most of us will spend more time indoors. We will be breathing less fresh air and more recycled indoor air. That indoor air can be dusty, moldy, and contain contaminants from combustion of heating and cooking appliances. We can do a lot to mitigate the potential harm of constantly breathing in stale indoor air. Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV) introduces fresh exterior air into your home to maintain healthy oxygen levels. To stop your home from being a “sick” house, there are some steps you should consider taking: 1. Clean your HRV air filters and wash the core. 2. Older homes can be retrofitted with an HRV by a qualified vendor. 3. HEPA filters can be added to help reduce severe allergies. There are room-sized electronic air filters that you can plug into a regular household electrical outlet that do an excellent job of removing contaminants from your indoor air. Is Waterloo Region serious about manufacturing? That's the key theme in my latest from the Waterloo Region Record: https://lnkd.in/g97THnmK   Here are three reasons the Wilmot land assembly has to happen: 1) We've had the lowest industrial vacancy rate in Canada for years. This is a big problem - we've missed out on billions in investment and thousands of jobs. 2) Wilmot is the best option. It’s flat, close to transportation routes, far from our water sources and represents just 0.35% of the Region’s farmland. This isn't a food scarcity issue. 3) The business community is supportive. We're hearing the loudest voices in opposition, but anyone who supports growth and prosperity in our community – especially business leaders – are for it. I know because they tell me.   Let's get back to facts and good faith arguments. We have a strong farming heritage, but we have a strong manufacturing heritage, too. It's part of our past and present. Let's act like it's part of our future, too.

They believe in carbon tax, they believe in climate change, they believe taxes will fix the problem, they believe the PBO is right saying citizens get back more than they pay. Total BS. I have yet to meet anyone who receives a rebate from lower income individuals right through to high income earners. Nonsense and bias by CBC, what else is new? As for the panelists, each to their own opinion but do not lie outright and say 8 out of 10 receive more than they pay. Maybe their income is high enough not to be effected by tax increases, yet how can they ignore the majority who are, how can they ignore the homeless and how can they ignore the amount of citizens relying on food banks to eat. How can they ignore the issue of decriminalization of hard drugs and the devastating effects? Because of the government, shame on them. If they were truly unbiased panelists, they would address all subjects not just some, they would address all issues faced by Canadians. CBC and their bonuses, they sure do love their bonuses which taxpayers pay for. The government claims the CBC works independently and at arms length of the government. The head of CBC claims it is ultimately the government who approves their bonuses, through a two or three tiered system. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Both are full of BS working in collaboration and carrying a narrative, a very biased narrative in favour of the government. #DefundTheCBC

Plastics update! 📢 The fourth session on plastic pollution, including marine environments, has begun in Ottawa. Shocking figures reveal 3120 Mt of plastics in use globally, with 353 Mt wasted yearly, and 82 Mt mismanaged. The comparison with e-waste highlights another concerning aspect. Canada’s chemical sector produces thousands of products that we use every day, from cosmetics to food packaging, generating annual revenues of $68.5 billion and more than 90,000 direct jobs. Chemical and fertilizer production is also responsible for 23 megatonnes of direct emissions and an estimated additional 14 megatonnes of supply chain emissions and the need to #transition the Canadian industry has been largely overlooked. However, we'll need high-value, low-emissions chemicals in a net-zero world—from the plastics in our EVs, to the resins protecting our solar panels against the weather, and the refrigerants in our heat pumps. Turning this challenge into an opportunity will require forward thinking, and that’s why Clean Energy Canada, and lead authors Jana Elbrecht and Oliver Sheldrick, have worked with the chemicals sector to develop a blueprint for a net-zero roadmap. Canada has to protect its #ZEV industry but simply waiting to see where the political crosswinds push us won't be a winning industrial approach. We also have to be proactive. In Accelerate-Accélérer's national consultation on getting #MoreCanada in what we drive in North America, we're asking industry, labour, Indigenous interests, researchers and other stakeholders their views on what goals Canada's #ZEV sector should pursue when #CUSMA comes up for review in 2026. Answer some or all of the questions and inform what a successful approach for Canada looks like.
