🌟 From Reflection to Creation: Pre-K 4C’s Journey into Storytelling 🌟 What does it take to create a story? This was the question that launched an incredible learning journey for our Pre-K 4C learners—a process rooted in imagination, collaboration, and sustainability. It all began with reflective discussions about the elements of a narrative. The children explored the building blocks of storytelling, such as character, setting, conflict, and resolution, while strengthening their skills in sequencing and retelling. But this was just the beginning. As part of our PBL investigative path, "This is Not Trash", our group learned to value materials that might otherwise be discarded, transforming them into tools for building, creating art, and telling stories. This project not only sparked creativity but also planted the seeds of sustainable and responsible consumption, aligning with Global Goal #12. Inspired by Reggio Emilia’s The Festive Thought, they embraced the concept of reusing materials such as bottle caps, fabric scraps, paper rolls, and other discarded items from home and our Green Heart Center to engage deeply with the idea of visual metaphors—activating their ability to see beyond the surface of materials. Through this process, the children thought abstractly, made meaningful connections, and transformed discarded items to bring their characters to life with imagination and purpose. The journey culminated in a collaborative stop-motion video. From crafting characters and designing scenes to moving elements, capturing images, and recording voiceovers, the children were at the center of every step. This hands-on experience introduced them to purposeful technology use, showcasing how tools like stop motion can amplify their creativity and turn ideas into reality. The result? A powerful, heartwarming narrative about caring for our planet, told through the children’s eyes. This project is a testament to their boundless imagination, their ability to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, and their growing confidence as change-makers for a sustainable future. I extend my gratitude to everyone who supported this journey at Escola Concept, especially: Karin Gunn, our Project Design educator, for being a fantastic partner, embracing every challenge to bring our ideas to life; Katherine S., for sharing her expertise in the Reggio Emilia approach and REMIDA practices; all the families who encouraged their children to bring reusable materials to our learning space; and especially my beloved young learners, whose boundless curiosity and creativity inspire fresh perspectives on the world around us. This journey highlighted not only the creative potential of sustainability and technology but also the value of passion, teamwork, persistence, and joy. What Instructional Design is.   Instructional design is essential in shaping 21st-century learning by addressing the evolving needs of learners and educators in a complex, technology-driven world. As traditional education adapts to accommodate diverse learning styles, global demands, and technological integration, instructional design becomes crucial in creating engaging, flexible learning experiences.   In today’s world, learning extends beyond classrooms into virtual spaces, workplaces, and informal settings. Instructional design ensures that learning experiences are not only aligned with educational standards but also adaptable to diverse learners, whether students or professionals seeking continuous development. By using systematic methods, instructional designers create experiences that promote deep learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving—skills vital for modern success.   Moreover, instructional design fosters the integration of digital tools and resources, which are now essential in education. Online platforms, digital simulations, and multimedia content allow for interactive, accessible learning environments. Instructional designers thoughtfully select technologies and design experiences that motivate learners, personalize learning pathways, and ensure knowledge retention.   Learner-centered education is another key focus of instructional design. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, 21st-century education requires personalized learning experiences tailored to individual needs, allowing learners to progress at their own pace. Use case-scenario of Claude.ai. I owe many thanks to Dr. Jason Gulya for sharing this tool recently last week. I showed high school teachers how to use Claude to create online games for formative assessment in their classroom. These are my observations from the session: 1.) Accessing the tool was easy. It has a good UI/UX. Easy to follow and use. 2.) The output generation is not just text! (This was amazing.) Teachers created online games. I provided a sample prompt. 3.) You can publish your online creation immediately and share a link. 4.) Teachers were a bit intimidated when they saw the code. So, I showed them preview mode ;) 5.) Sharing the link brought a different conversation about ethics and cybersecurity. I emphasized these components. 6.) Additionally, I love that it gave JavaScript code for the online component like a website, app, plugin and game. Yes, I tried all of those. I was thinking of different games that teachers can create for formative assessments: jeopardy, matching, scrambles, sorting, multiple choice, and so many. Also teachers can share their links in their LMS, website or anywhere they can safely share a link. Lastly, I can't get over how quick and easy it was to create a game. I highly recommend this as part of your teacher toolbox.
