💥 Two years after Tim Horton’s settled a class action in Canada for sharing location data through its use of the Radar SDK in its app… 💥…And two years after Greenley vs. Kochava claimed the Kochava SDK intercepts consumers’ location data when using mobile apps 💥…Bender vs. Twilio claims the Segment SDK collects personal information in a similar fashion. Are class action plaintiffs taking up the cause of SDK liability? Or are these flukes? In Bender vs. Twilio, Noah Bender downloaded and used the Calm meditation app on his cell phone. He later claimed the Segment SDK intercepted sensitive communications between himself and Calm. Segment is designed for developers to collect data , including search terms, search results, keystrokes, button presses, page views, and consumers’ names and email addresses. Bender is suing Twilio for violating America's Wiretap Act, the California Wiretap Act, and California's Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CDAFA). This may be the Calm before the storm for class actions. Bender's complaint alleges over 11,000 app developers have integrated Segment into apps for shopping, productivity, gaming, and mental health. Shouldn't we have an *actual* conversation about how Element AI, Canada's beloved AI company (until it was acquired by Silicon Valley) *before* funding another AI company hundreds of millions? Just a thought! Element AI (now a part of ServiceNow) isn't our only public conversation to be had. North Inc., before it was acquired by Google, shares a similar story. I wrote about it in Artificial Intelligence Policy and Funding in Canada: Public Investments, Private Interests. "Prior to the acquisition by Google, North Inc. was heavily funded through grants by the Canadian government when it was under independent ownership. Sharing a pro tip today! Evaluating an AI tool can be complex, but Rogers' 5 Factors make it simpler. Here are the key criteria for assessment: → Relative Advantage Measure how the AI tool enhances current workflows or improves efficiency. → Compatibility Assess if the tool aligns with existing systems, values, and needs of your organization. → Complexity Determine the ease of use. The less complicated, the faster the adoption and better the results. → Trialability Check if you can test the AI tool on a small scale before full implementation. This helps mitigate risks. → Observability Ensure the results and benefits of the tool are easily visible and measurable. This simple yet effective strategy has helped me in selecting AI tools that deliver real value.

Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez says that #1 blocker for Enterprise GenAI use cases is data privacy and #2 blocker is the cost (implies ROI). He also explained what Canadian AI startup, Cohere does and how they make money. A must watch for anyone who is interested in Enterprise GenAI use cases. He also said that GenAI fear mongering is cheap ways to get attention (I am paraphrasing, he didn’t use the word cheap). Quite a bit commentary on Google Cloud AI developments as well. Other mentions Oracle and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Aidan comes across as a mature tech leader for his young age. He sounds more realistic and less me too, in GenAI hyped era. Well NVIDIA is now worth more than the GDP of Canada and in fact, more than 14 of the G20. So what is behind this insane growth and valuation? 1. Exponential requirements for growth. If we look at "GPT5" the needs will be far more than GPT4. From GPT2 to GPT4 OpenAI progressively added orders of magnitude more computing power to calculate the models. Rough estimates are GPT4 used 3,000 to 10,000x the compute power compared to GPT2 2. Data centers aren't nearly big enough...by a lot. GPT4 benefitted from having a lot of excess compute in existing data centers. But the next models will need compute thousands of times bigger. Think $100b or $1T data centers. 3. Google, Microsoft, Amazon are investing billions (>10b each) to grow the data centers to meet the demands. And now I'll let you guess who is supplying those chipsets.... Does the idea of falling in love with an AI sound crazy? The reality shown through this article is that AI can be an incredibly powerful tool for many people who struggle quietly with social anxiety, loneliness, depression, neurodivergence and more. These challenges are becoming more common and people who suffer often have no where to turn and nobody to turn to. Enter AI companions and a whole new world of machine and human interaction. I encourage you to read this fascinating and courageous article about the power and complexity of AI as a personal companion before you judge the idea of AI for companionship and love. The reality is that companionship may end up becoming one of AI's primary uses, and there is data out there showing this may already be the reality, with Character AI being the second most visited AI website and the AI tool that people spend the most time interacting with. Rather than judging the idea of falling in love with an AI and/or AI for companionship, I think we ought to ask ouselves about the world we live in that is causing so many people to stuggle with challenges such as social anxiety, depression and everything else that so many humans stuggle with. When it comes to AI companionship and love, I think its important not to hate the players .. or characters, but instead to hate the game or society we live in that makes people feel alone and depressed. While I don't use AI for companionship, I do use it as a personal thinking assistant, second set of eyes, devils advocate and work colleage and it's incredibly useful to me in these ways. I'm at #Collision Conf here in Toronto, and I'm seeing a ton of AI startups. Many of them are asking me how to scale and where to find the right people. It's interesting because the vast majority of these “Ai companies” have never even heard of agentic engineering approaches. The ability to use agents in place of traditional people-based processes is the next step for startups. The next major trend will be billion-dollar startups with just a handful of people. Most of the startups here don't need to worry about hiring a big team. What they need is a core group who understand the basics of agentic engineering. They need the ability to deploy agents within their startup structure, building a company around these autonomous systems that can scale operations, manage finances, drive sales, and handle internet / data infrastructure and cloud computing deployments. With a small, knowledgeable team, you can create and manage these systems, scaling your startup to thousands of agents at a fraction of the cost of hiring a large staff. Sometimes at cost reduction of 1000 to 1. The real question is, where do you find the people who can help you do this? Define their roles and responsibilities clearly. If you can do that, you can build any company. Honestly, half the companies here at the Collision Conference could massively benefit from this approach.
