THERE'S A UNIQUE ALBERTA ADVANTAGE INTERSECTION ON THE PROVINCE'S FUTURE PATHWAY... It's the crossroads at which the #energy industry meets the #agrifood sector beyond which the two navigate forward collaboratively to define a next-generation Alberta Advantage. A key trans-sectoral focus? Awareness through advocacy and education. While in many ways the energy-agrifood interface is as old as the province itself, it has been largely transactional and in the shadows. Ask ten Albertans who is among the largest consumers of natural gas is and nine will be hard pressed to answer: the fertilizer sector. Yes, Virginia, methane is a key input into our food system as an input into the products farmers use to keep our plates full. We need to "know better" as Albertans if these realities are to translate into a better economy and better environment. But thanks to the work we're doing at Agriculture for Life, the sectors are pivoting from the transactional to the strategic. In the process, we're creating a foundation for a future that focuses on the twin pillars of energy and food security and stability of supply -- while enabling a highly resolved focus on climate and environment imperatives. Tomorrow night, at the Agriculture for Life annual Harvest Gala at Heritage Park Historical Village, we're pulling the covers off a unique strategic advisory body comprised of 30 leaders from both sectors. Their role is to guide our board of directors toward initiatives and efforts geared toward education, literacy, and critical thinking. The concept will be brought to life through questions I will put to Glenn Logan of Wheatcrest Farms and Scott Van Vliet, of the Sheppard Creek Cattle Company. Glenn's a fellow board director and both he and Scott sits on the advisory committee -- and both live and work simultaneously in both sectors. That conversation will be reinforced by subsequent perspectives offered at the Gala by key post-secondary leaders like fellow director Stuart Cullum of Red Deer Polytechnic and Brad Donaldson EdD of Lethbridge Polytechnic We're also pleased to welcome a great contingent of energy folks who are members of the Canadian Energy Executive Association, an organization that shares Agriculture for Life's advocacy and education values. Running a high-integrity carbon credit program at scale is exceedingly challenging, especially in agriculture. Indigo is proud to have issued three rounds of carbon credits so far (with more on the way). We are thrilled to announce that we’ve published learnings from implementing an agricultural carbon project at scale in a peer-reviewed paper in the Journal of Environmental Management. This milestone represents our commitment to scientific rigor, continuous improvement, and transparency: qualities core to how Indigo's sustainability programs operate. [Thanks to The Don & Joan Stanley Family Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation, Myriad Canada supports innovation to boost climate resilience and livelihoods]   Seaweed farmers in Southeast Asia are on the frontlines of climate disruption. The warming climate has raised ocean temperatures, reducing nutrients near the surface and promoting plant diseases. Warmer waters also give momentum to major tropical storms which decimate seaweed production.   In this context, the Climate Foundation is not only developing a deepwater seaweed irrigation technology designed to mitigate the effects of climate change, but also a transportable seaweed biorefinery that can extract a liquid containing valuable biostimulants from the seaweed before it is dried. This seaweed biorefinery prototype was successfully tested in Bohol, a tropical coastal community in Southeast Asia, in late 2023 with the support of Myriad Canada.   Farmers have been very receptive to adopting these new solutions, which can be operated on a community level. “We are one of the few international projects that have actually developed right in the Global South for communities in Southeast Asia” says engineering consultant Theresa Theuretzbacher. “We’ve really tried to develop it for the people there to use it.” Once the technology is perfected, it can be scaled up to enhance food security and sustainability across Southeast Asia and beyond.   To find out more on this project: https://lnkd.in/eUi-QPFp   #climateresilience #seaweed #technology #southeastasia   Myriad Alliance Fondation Roi Baudouin Myriad USA Give2Asia Myriad Australia The Gift Trust New Zealand

The Canadian government’s 2024 budget released Tuesday included a proposal to increase the capital gains inclusion rate We weren’t going to write about this (we had a ton of funny jokes instead), but we received several notes from cleantech founders saying this would be a severe deterrent to cleantech growth in Canada. Cleantech remains one of the fastest-growing venture categories globally. This means the decisions on where companies are built are happening now, vs more mature sectors or where growth has slowed. The policy changes countries make today will impact which countries are leaders in cleantech. Canada talks about being a leader, but this is the latest in a string of decisions that will make it more challenging to build tech companies here vs. the US and the UK.
