As part of an ongoing hate-crimes investigation related to the Vancouver chapter of the now-proscribed 'Samidoun' terrorist organization, VPD ERT yesterday executed a search warrant on the home of the chapter's lead 'activist'. That person was arrested. I continue to be disappointed by, but not surprised with, the 'man in the street' reactions elicited by the news reporters. The young woman, dare I assume her gender, listed a litany of 'reasons' why she felt the use of ERT was "unnecessarily over the top", citing that "this is a neighbourhood with families, and older people, disabled people". The male, on the other hand, seemed to think that such tactics would have been justified had there been a "gunfight". Such comments, although eagerly recorded and repeated by the media, are utterly irrelevant to the issue at hand, and only illuminate the sad ignorance and lack of critical thinking of a population whose only exposure to police is watching TV and movies, whereupon they base their 'opinions'. While I'm not a VPD member and I am not connected in any way to this investigation or the warrant service operation, I am professionally familiar with the role and tactics of ERT and similar units in Canada and elsewhere. There would be a threat assessment conducted for this that would have necessitated the deployment of ERT; most police operations, in fact, do not involve ERT, because there's no justification for it. This warrant, this house, these people justified it, and the defence lawyers for Samidoun will test it in court. That's how policing-by-consent using minimum reasonable force works in a democracy- the very democracy that Samidoun, et al, openly seek to overthrow by terrorist means. 🇨🇦POLICE | PROGRAMMED IMPUNITY Extracts: A disciplinary decision against a former Vancouver police sergeant, who was found to have improperly shared degrading messages about a colleague who was sexually assaulted, has been voided after authorities realized the senior officer who oversaw the investigation retired a week before it was issued. The Canadian Press has obtained a copy of a letter from deputy police complaint commissioner Andrea Spindler dated Nov. 15 that said Jansen's retirement meant it did "not appear that he satisfied the definition of a 'discipline authority'" under the Police Act. "As a result, I am of the opinion that Former Chief Constable Jansen had no authority to issue his … decision, and that the decision is a nullity having no legal effect," Spindler's letter says. I have no direct experience in this matter, as I never worked for a law enforcement organization (save for a brief stint as a terrorism consultant for the OPP’s Provincial Anti-Terrorism Section in 2015). I did work for CSIS, however, which has a similar tool called a Section 21 warrant (in law enforcement this instrument is labelled a Part VI warrant). In speaking with former CSIS and RCMP colleagues over the years, I have learned a lot about the procedure required to apply for and receive authority for intercepting a private citizen’s communications. In a nutshell, it isn’t easy by any means. Judges are not ones to agree to warrants as if they were handing out candy at Halloween. The process is a long one and involves several steps which are, if I understand correctly: A need for an existing investigation to have progressed to the point where spies/cops believe they need a warrant to fully understand and monitor a threat to public safety/national security. Warrants, at least at CSIS, were the LAST, not the FIRST, tool used in such investigations; Reasonable grounds to suspect or believe this invasion of privacy is necessary to protect the public; The drafting of a lengthy affidavit that outlines all the facts to date and the gaps which the agency is certain may be filled by intercepted data; A long toing and froing with Crown prosecutors and the originating agency to ensure that all the T’s are crossed and I’s dotted (this often takes months); Presentation to a judge whose default position is that this extraordinary measure should be granted only in the direst circumstances. My sources tell me that few warrants are agreed to at first blush, and affiants often have to rewrite their affidavits several times before a judge will sign off on them; Wiretap warrants can be challenged in what is known as a Garofilo hearing, and if enough doubt on the content of the application is cast, the warrant is not granted. I’d imagine “we don’t like Somalis” would not pass this stage.

How do I become an armed guard? The Authorized To Carry (ATC) is a course training standard developed by the Chief Firearms Office and designed for armed guard personnel here in Canada. The armed guard industry has historically handled and transported cash, negotiable goods and valuable goods. With the uptick in retail store 'smash n grabs' and robberies, there has been an increase in the requirement for armed guards to be posted at various venues as a means of an armed presence and deterrent. This is not something that was common in Canada, but there many regions of the world where seeing an armed guard posted at a retail store, even at entrances of shopping malls where guards are armed with carbines, UZI's and pump action shotguns. How to become an armed guard is a process though. You are required to possess your PAL & RPAL. Next, an approved armed security service provider with the Ministry must endorse and enroll you into an ATC course. You are not permitted to enroll into an ATC course as an individual - generally speaking. The ATC Course may only be delivered by an approved CFO ATC Instructor. Currently, most police services in Canada are operating well above capacity, placing front-line officers under significant physical and mental strain. The demands placed on our officers are reaching unsustainable levels, and urgent action is needed to address this crisis. The men and women who serve as our front-line officers dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe. However, they are being stretched thin as they work tirelessly to maintain law and order in the face of growing challenges. Canada's military justice system is broken. And it's not just affecting individuals—it's putting our national security at risk. When senior officers like Lieutenant-General Steve Whelan are wrongly accused and publicly humiliated, the damage extends far beyond reputation—it weakens our defense's very foundation. This isn't just about one officer's case. It's about a flawed system where rushed investigations and public pressure precede fairness and truth. The result? Acquitted officers with tarnished careers, lost trust in leadership, and a vulnerable military weakened by the removal of experienced leaders. Systems that prioritize appearances over substance create long-term damage. Whether in business, government, or military, shortcuts in process and fairness undermine trust and effectiveness. We need to restore integrity, consistency, and due process to protect those who protect us. Canada's military justice system needs more than surface-level reforms. 🇨🇦POLICE & AUXILIARY FORCE Demonstrations / crowd control and/or maintaining and restoring order Police leadership demands more police.. A number of major security services have acquired crowd control expertise that as nothing to envy to the police. It is mainly these same security services that comprehensively manage, under contract, several major festivals in the summer, winter seasons, during world tours, and other shows that welcome hundreds of thousands of people and many others — not the police. For the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) to request more funding for these more irregular demonstration events, which require more human resources and other preparations, is entirely reasonable in view of the global trend that fully justifies it. But to maintain or acquire an overcrowded, dormant, "permanent" police force that is activated as needed across the country within police departments is not only unreasonable, but demonstrates an incompetence of adaptability to the modern security needs of our societies. These large-scale events are irregular and ad hoc. You have to pay when you need it, not all the time! From one year to the next, needs differ in interval and intensity. That's why bolstering the police force as needed with an auxiliary security force is in no way comparable in terms of cost-effectiveness flexibility to permanently swelling our police forces across the country. This compulsive disease of always demanding specifically more police officers to respond to contemporary challenges does not in any way meet the needs of expertise of a modern police force or the needs of security. Just think about it for a moment: The police, heavily equipped to fight crime, whose interventions are mainly related to social issues, are non-criminal or benign in nature — and not to public security.. https://lnkd.in/dKyKHamu Get help, regularize, securitize are not linked to the police specifically — the pervasiveness of the need for security in general is not specifically police. Cybercrime, economic crime, corporate crime, complex tax fraud, entity collusion, money laundering, large scale deficient public infrastructure, ..., — has nothing to do with today's archaic police force that hires gendarmes en masse.. Are you going to educate gendarmes or go for the civilian pros? — Police officers often held positions requiring expertise for which they have neither the skills nor other abilities. Police forces urgently need civilian experts to fight crime effectively — such as engineers, computer scientists, accountants, MBAs, financiers, algorithm specialists, administrative assistants, laboratory expertise, mathematicians and others. Give badges in 6 months and sending them out on patrol like a sausage-making machine doesn't produce a police force with much depth — to say the least. Don't confuse the need for "force" with the need for police expertise — society needs competent police, muscles are accessories. -
