They are marking nearly a century of work that has celebrated and preserved cultures; but they’re also grappling with sometimes troubling legacies and plotting how they move to a more equitable future that empowers Indigenous storytelling and journalism. The past few months working in Sarnia/Aamjiwnaang, I encountered a form of trauma distinct from the commonly discussed "intergenerational" type. Environmental trauma profoundly affects the Indigenous people of Aamjiwnaang in every aspect of their lives. As a visual storyteller, conveying this unspoken pain through individual stories requires to drop ego and fake compassion. Here are a few steps I follow to ensure respectful and fair representation: 1. Understanding the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the subjects. 2. Collaborating with them to develop visual strategies for telling their stories. 3. Project managing a photographic storytelling that humanize their pain. We need more resources like this board game that "gamifies" learning about reconciliation. Games are for everyone, not just youth. The magic in this approach is that games are significantly more memorable than information. While playing a board game may not give you the information you need right away, it creates a social environment that is more enjoyable to be in than a typical classroom. I've been a Dungeon Master for years, and this game motivates me to create a Dungeon and Dragon adventure that will support young Indigenous people's learning about reconciliation. #FrayedFeathers #IndigenousYouth #YouthReconciliation #Reconciliation #IndigenousPolicy #Policy #Advocacy #TruthAndReconciliation

🇨🇦 #ICYMI With indicators suggesting that public trust in CBC/Radio-Canada is declining, the broadcaster’s Policy and International Relations Director, Jon Medline explains the various initiatives they are embarking on to address and resolve the problem. 💭 "At the end of the day, as champions of the highest-quality journalism, universal service, and democratic processes, we just can’t have it. Eroding trust levels not only alienate segments of existing and potential audiences, they also threaten key sources of funding. Public service media need the support of various constituents — and loss of faith threatens underlying financial supports. That ultimately means fewer journalists, reduced coverage, and challenges across our entire operations, including non-news and cultural content." Reflections from a Juror: My Experience Volunteering with Crime Writers of Canada From December 2023 to April 2024, I had the most rewarding experience volunteering with Crime Writers of Canada as a juror for the Unpublished category. As you might guess, this involved a significant amount of reading. Fortunately, I love to read. It was exhilarating to be exposed to a wide range of writing styles within a single category. The diversity of ideas that constitute a crime story was truly fascinating! When providing critiques for each submission, my goal was to offer positive feedback and present any negative aspects in an encouraging manner, rather than being overly critical. This is where the role of an editor becomes invaluable. Writers have always shaped our world and our understanding of it. Where would we be without them? Writing and editing are distinct yet complementary skills. Writers create, and editors refine their creations. As an editor, my role is to communicate, support, and revise, ensuring that the writer's idea, voice, and trust are preserved.
