A common question arises regarding the construction of the pyramids in Egypt: the stones used weigh over 20 tonnes, and no such stones are found near Giza, where the pyramids are located—except in Aswan. Aswan is about an 8-hour drive away from Giza, so how did the ancient Egyptians transport these massive stones from Aswan to Giza? The answer is quite straightforward. Historical records indicate that during the construction of the pyramids, the ancient Egyptians used a combination of log rollers, sledges, the Nile River, and a wet sand technique to move the enormous stones. For short distances, workers employed log rollers by placing large logs under the stones and rolling them along. For longer distances, the stones were placed on sledges, which were then pulled over the ground. The Nile River played a crucial role in transporting the stones as well. The stones were loaded onto large wooden boats and sailed down the river to Giza. Recent discoveries suggest that the Egyptians also used a "wet sand technique," where they would wet the sand in front of the sledges to reduce friction, making it easier to pull the heavy stones. These methods, combined with the determination and ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians, allowed them to move stones weighing up to 20 tonnes over long distances to achieve their monumental goals. It’s truly remarkable how ancient Egyptian engineers accomplished this without the sophisticated technology we have today.
