Canadian consumers are resilient and love to shop for apparel - and I am definitely one of them! Last year, Canadian apparel's sales growth outpaced the overall sector performance. Despite economic challenges like inflation and high interest rates, the Trendex North America report reveals that Canadian consumers have not shied away from refreshing their wardrobes, particularly in the women’s and luxury segments. 👗 Women’s apparel surged ahead with significant gains across all categories, while luxury apparel grew by approximately 10%, bolstered by increased tourism and expanded high-end retail spaces at places like Yorkdale and the Mink Mile. Interestingly, e-commerce saw a slight decline in the apparel segment, as consumers favoured the in-person shopping experiences. As we look ahead, the market is expected to continue growing in 2024, albeit at a more moderate pace. I grew up (mostly) in Canada, but started my career abroad. When I moved back and started navigating the innovation landscape, I was stunned. I can’t tell you how many VPs at large brand name companies told me variations of: “Yes, innovation is in my title but we don’t really do much of that here” “Honestly, we just wait to see what our American peer companies do and copy that” “Innovation is something we talk about but isn’t really a priority” “We’re not looking to innovate much if it involves taking any risk” So the headline below really resonates. This is a conversation I find myself having on an almost weekly basis - with Canadian investors, founders, talent. There’s strong tech talent here. And such heart. AND We could do with more self-belief. More audacity. A bigger vision of what’s possible. If you feel this is unfair, let me be the first to say: yes, this is a generalization. Yes, there are plenty of exceptions and success stories. And yes, on the whole, my experience is that it is generally true in Canadian tech, and innovation in Canadian industry more broadly. #canadiantech #digitalhealth #healthtech #founders
