I want to talk about SUCCESS, specifically related to the immigrant experience. I moved from Dubai to Canada about six years ago. Spoiler alert: it’s been a journey where I often feel like I’m running a marathon... but the finish line keeps moving! 🏃‍♂️🏁 ✈️🌍 Coming to Canada, I knew I’d have to work hard, but I didn’t expect to feel like I had to work ten times harder than everyone else just to prove my worth. It’s what I like to call the “immigrant hustle.” There’s this pressure to prove yourself constantly, not just to others, but also to yourself and to the version of *me* that left everything behind in Dubai. 😅✈️ The funny thing is, even when I do achieve something big, it often doesn’t *feel* big. Instead of celebrating, I’m already on to the next goal, chasing that next win. It feels like I’m stuck in an airport waiting for a flight that’s been delayed... indefinitely. Turns out, there’s a name for this feeling, hedonic adaptation. Basically, we get used to our successes so quickly that they stop feeling like successes at all. 🇨🇦 Big Changes Coming to Canada's International Student Program! 🚨 (Yes, again) Canada's international student program has faced significant challenges, largely due to bad agents and their negative impact on students. Thankfully, the government is finally stepping in to address these issues with new proposed (proposed, so not confirmed yet) rules aimed at improving the program's integrity and protecting students. Here's a quick overview of what's in the works: ✅ Colleges Must Report Attendance: Designated learning institutes (DLIs) will now have stricter rules to track and report that students are actually attending and studying, not just landing in Canada and disappearing. This requirement was always supposed to be in place, but enforcement is being ramped up due to ongoing issues. ✅ Random Inspections: Colleges will face random inspections for compliance. Institutions found to be non-compliant could be placed on a list, preventing them from issuing student visas for up to 12 months, effectively shutting them down. 💣 New Study Permit for College Transfers: Students wishing to switch colleges within Canada will need to apply for a new study permit. This rule aims to curb the widespread practice of college hopping, which has become a mini-industry due to the ease of transferring without filing new paperwork. While these changes are still in the proposal stage, they signal a significant shift in how the program will be managed. Struggling as a Fresher in a Competitive Job Market. The past two years in Canada have been a rollercoaster of challenges. Despite my efforts—approaching over 200 people on LinkedIn and applying to countless positions—I often find myself facing a brick wall. Employers seem to demand 3+ years of experience, even for entry-level roles, leaving many fresh graduates like myself feeling overlooked and discouraged. I have experience in HR and Accounting, yet I still identify as a "fresher" in this highly competitive job market. The job search feels increasingly daunting, with references hard to come by and opportunities limited. I urge companies, especially MNCs, to consider fresh talent with the drive and eagerness to learn. The hunger for growth and innovation should not be restricted to those with years of experience. Here’s how these factors can impact immigrant job seekers: 1.    Limited Networking: Immigrants may feel intimidated to reach out to new contacts, attend professional events, or seek mentors, all of which are key for building connections in a new country. 2.    Fear of Miscommunication: Anxiety about language skills or unfamiliarity with workplace culture can make immigrants hesitant to engage in conversations with potential employers or colleagues, limiting their opportunities. 3.    Fear of Bias: Immigrants may fear that employers will hold biases against them due to their background, accent, or lack of local experience. If there’s one blog of mine that I recommend Canadian workplaces read it’s this one. This is what you need to remember: Canada aims to welcome 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024, 500,000 in 2025 and plateau at 500,000 in 2026 (www.canada.ca) Yet… Canada does not have the funding (or the teachers) to support the amount of language training that will be required. (or even to support the amount of language learners currently) Nor do most pathways into Canada require workplace appropriate levels of English. Attention International Students in Canada!
