Performance Evaluation of Gas-Power Strategies for Building Energy Conversion
Energy Conversion and Management
The paper compared natural gas and hydrogen fuels for the purpose of energy conservation. A case study simulation was developed for a nine story hotel located in Toronto. Two alternative energy source case studies involved the generation of hydrogen via wind power and a fuel cell and the use of natural gas directly in a steam reforming fuel cell.

Resilient Micro Energy Grids with Gas-Power and Renewable Technologies

The world is moving towards a smart energy grid with green and clean infrastructure which will enable efficient bidirectional energy supply with a reduced carbon footprint. Due to increasing energy demands and the pressing issues of efficient energy use, there is a real need to increase the penetration of gas technologies in the power grid. The government of Canada and stakeholders are looking for ways to increase the reliability and sustainability of the power grid; and gas-power technologies may provide a solution. This paper explores the integration of gas and renewable energy generation technologies within various electricity generation scenarios with the goal of developing designs for a resilient micro energy grid (MEG). The scenarios are then evaluated using an advanced algorithm to provide optimum scenario depending on various key performance indicators (KPIs). KPIs to be examined include: economic, power quality, reliability, and environmental friendliness. This work is done using three different systems; a geographic information system (GIS) for recording transmission/distribution lines and generation data, a database to store the information, and a MATLAB-based algorithm for evaluating scenarios. These systems are synthesized and represented into a graphical user interface (GUI) where the user defines the zone, area and cell for desired output and system parameters to generate scenarios to identify the optimum generation.

Performance Optimization of Integrated Gas and Power Within Micro Energy Grid Using Hybrid PSO–PS Algorithm
International Journal of Energy Research

In this paper, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to evaluate and optimize the design and operation of Micro Energy Grids (MEG) in combined gas and power networks. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are modeled and proposed to evaluate and assess MEGs. The paper begins by proposing a comprehensive study to define KPIs which are used to evaluate the following MEG parameters: economical efficiency, reliability, environmental conservation, and power quality. Multi-objective evaluation functions are then developed by building a relationship matrix of MEG and KPI components. The results are then displayed as optimized power generation percentages for each technology with values for four key performance indicator (KPI) categories: Cost, Quality, Reliability, and Environmental Friendliness. Two case studies are examined in this report; both the province of Ontario and Toronto regional zone under all system parameters with varying percentage of generation via gas technology (GT). Results indicated that the optimal scenario for both Ontario and Toronto was achieved at PSO percentage generation via gas technology with improved Cost KPI and other KPIs remaining approximately constant.

Analysis of Solar PV/T and Geothermal System
This report covers a proposal to implement sustainable and alternative energy technologies in order to turn a home into a positive net energy building. The house in question was already relatively efficient, as it has a solar thermal collector and various high efficiency lights and appliances. A proposed wind turbine, ground source heat pump and solar photovoltaic (PV) modules allowed the system to generate excess energy up to 20%. Greenhouse gas emissions were also mitigated due to the removal…

Wind Chill Modeled in Mixed Convection
The goal of the project was to create a model for simulating wind chill and compare it against the new wind chill equivalent temperature model. The heat transfer from a person's face was modeled as a vertical cylinder in cross flow. My portion of the project was to create a MATLAB code that would iteratively solve for the temperature under low air speed mixed convection conditions that would match the high wind speed forced convection. To achieve this I wrote out sample calculations for each step of the procedure and created an additional program to find the air properties as needed. My other responsibilities on the project were to write the theoretical background, model overview, and final formatting.
