A block of wood was passed among the audience, supposedly the NEXT BIG BREAKTHROUGH in urban development! Demo concluded, by observing a piece of wood! Building blocks of future skyscrapers! The promise? With this, Google will build a "Smart City" for us, the peasants of Toronto, in Queens Quay 🏖️🏢 Sidewalk Labs' website now points to a newer Google scam, it reads: "Build Sustainably with Google Earth"! Bait and switch, but let enough time pass so no one remembers 🤢 https://lnkd.in/gd3B-a6m Guess now the investors and Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario have shit loads of these wooden blocks, ready to shove up somewhere, to find a use for! All because the name "Bloomberg" sounds authoritative enough to our ears? I stayed up coding until 4am so many nights for two years when I started Lightspeed Commerce — to me, this is part of the entrepreneur journey. Had a blast reflecting on those early years and discussing the challenges and opportunities of navigating a tech startup with Harry Stebbings from 20VC. Some takeaways: - Achieving strong product-market fit requires an iterative, customer-centric approach — especially with early users. Lightspeed wouldn’t have achieved profitability if we weren’t so close to our customers. - Companies can take different paths to scale, each with its trade-offs — some bootstrap profitably for years before taking VC funding. Sometimes you need the slow-burn process to create something truly phenomenal. - Founders must be willing to adapt their sales and distribution strategies as the business matures, especially after going public. Next one up, Glide! In an attempt to demystify some of the non-obvious elements we found when we first met the founders of our fastest growing portfolio companies at 186 Ventures, here is the third edition of the "idiosyncratic phenomenon". This highlight will be on Gautam A., Sameer Kapur, and Vishnu Chakroborty and their journey building Glide to bring world class, unparalleled enterprise grade infrastructure to the much overlooked market of credit unions and community banks-- some of the most important financial institutions across virtually every community in the US. Since we invested in their Winter, 2021 seed round, the company has built an incredible technology stack and has outpaced revenue projections by multiple orders of magnitude. Below is a good summary and context for the Q3 quarterly report released by the CVCA. On the surface, it seems like it was a good quarter for venture investment in Canadá. But a quick look under the surface paints a potentially very different picture: - the 130 deals closed in Q3 matches the lows during COVID in 2020 - the $2,651MM in deal value appears fairly robust other than the heady days of 2021. But it includes both the Clio deal of $1,240MM and the Cohere deal of $616MM leaving the remaining 128 deals totalling $795MM, matching the levels last seen during COVID in 2020 - the vast majority of the source of the capital invested in Q3 are from US or other foreign sources of capital - early stage investments continue their trend of performing poorly this year What does this all mean? Not really sure yet. It certainly was not a good quarter of activity but it’s too early to call this a trend. But is it a leading indicator that deal activity will continue to be constrained? Is there evidence of a lack of Canadian source capital required to invest in startups, and in particular, early stage opportunities. When the Federal government decided to increase capital gains taxes, many people in the innovation community sounded the alarm bells. The fear was that such an increase will further take the air out of the sails of funding startups in Canadá. While it is still too early to conclude the impact of such a move, it is clear the timing of this decision is very unfortunate because there is a clear trend that the activity in venture from Canadian sources of capital is slowing down materially.

The size of Canada combined with the geographic distribution of health conditions make the country ideal for multi-channel healthcare (e.g., Telehealth). Despite the significant demand for healthcare broadly, those business models haven't been able to achieve exponential growth or ideal unit economics just yet -- they've certainly grown and many are profitable, but millions of Canadians still lack primary care. It's a problem that's on the cusp of being solved (e.g., AI, integrated care) and could unlock significantly more access to care for Canadians.

Today is the first day of the 2024 #PEI Operating Partners forum -- one panel we'd like to highlight is on the future of value creation at the intersection of #talent, #tech, and #AI Our take is that AI won't save your portfolio companies. The right mix of talent and tech might -- but always, always err on the side of talent over tech. We think many PE operating partners are getting this fatally wrong -- "digital transformations" and "AI solutions" can't and won't fix the fundamental cultural issues blocking value creation. Here's what actually drives value: - Data foundations first. AI fails without clean, structured, consolidated data. period. get basic data architecture and data operations right. we've seen #portcos halve time spent on reporting just by standardizing their data pipelines. - Hire communicators, not just technologists. You need people who understand both business operations and the tech side. They're rare and expensive but worth it. They'll prevent your portfolio companies from building solutions nobody uses. - focus on specific, focused value drivers. Don't try to transform everything at once. identify 2-3 key operational metrics per company that directly impact ebitda. Build your talent and tech strategy around these. - Automate the obvious before the ambitious. most portfolio companies still waste far too much time on manual reporting and *basic* analytics. You have to fix that before attempting (before even thinking about) fancy predictive models and AI solutions. AI for talent is overrated. Use it for first-pass candidate screening and employee feedback analysis. but the real value is in using AI to make existing teams and domain experts more productive. IMO the winners in PE will be those who build strong data foundations, hire the right communicators, and implement tech strategically with concrete problems in mind. Focus on fundamentals. I’ve never read a book written by a friend, until now. Fin Heureuse is only available in French for now. In it, Derek Morin reverse-engineers his startup exit in just 24 months. And he does it with flawless execution. Knowing the person behind the words you're reading is a feeling I might not get to experience often, but I loved every page of this book. Here are 3 things that stood out to me: → The ugly > the bad > the good Derek doesn’t hold back. He even shares how he planned to push some people out right before executing his exit plan. → The recipe + the ingredients + the cooked meal From revenue numbers to growth metrics and the accounting books, he shares it all. You’ll also see how he course-corrected in real-time. → From decision made to the finish line, step by step He lays out the 24 months in chronological order, event by event, sharing what he learned along the way. It was a short, fun, and informative read. Reading Derek’s book encouraged me to do two things: → Be more surgical about our growth and direction, even without an exit in mind. → Start planning my own book, a dream I aim to achieve one day. Now while I work on convincing Derek to write the English version, I highly recommend it to my French-speaking founder friends. -- That’s Derek Morin, a successful founder, author, and friend. Other than a handful of Pension Plans domiciled in Quebec, the rest of the Canadian Pension Plan ecosystem has for the most part missed out on literally billions of $ of value creation generated by Canada’s innovative life sciences companies over the past five years. It doesn’t have to be so. Engaging Canada’s pension plans in Canada’s innovative life sciences ecosystem is not about charity or as some have suggested about “risking returns for pensioners”. It is about exactly the opposite. It is about providing alpha, enhancing returns, supporting high value domestic job creation, providing highly leveragable insights that can be used to enhance public market strategies, fulfilling ESG and impact objectives, and finally ensuring Canadians and not foreign investors derive a greater share of the value created from Canadian innovations and the hard work of Canadian entrepreneurs. I don’t know much, but that sounds like a highly virtuous circle, and as a Canadian who cares deeply about creating a vibrant economy for Canadians and seeing Canadian Pension Pensions prosper for pensioners, I, and am sure many of my peers, would be more than happy to help these Canadian Pension Plans learn how they could join that circle.
